What is the deal with the Westboro Baptist Church?

On Saturday July 17th 2010, a funeral will be held for a fallen soldier.

There is a church in Massachusetts who has set out to protest at this young man's service.

Regardless of how you feel about the war, do you think it's right to protest or cause such a scene at a funeral? Any funeral for that matter, not even just a soldiers, even if you disagree with what they stood for...

I despise what they do, which is trolling IRL, but it is the speech we hate the most that we must protect.

The Westboro Baptist Church is out of Topeka, Kansas. Their leader, Fred Phelps, is a certifiable nut bag. They practice the belief that homosexuals are destroying our nation and their battle cry is 'God hates fags'. They are of the belief that our troops are dying because God hates gays and our troops are fighting to defend a morally corrupt nation of homosexuals. They travel around to the funerals of soldiers to protest and put forth their message. I don't know a single person who takes them seriously. That said, as long as they are operating within state and municipal rules regarding protests then they shouldn't be stopped. We must be willing to accept the bad with the good if we are to stay true to our ideal of free speech. As a veteran myself, I wouldn't have it any other way.

The Westboro Baptist Church is an organization that is hell bent on making everyone else around them as miserable as they are. They deserve to be charged with disruption of peace every time they protest.

Westboro Baptist Church are a bunch of insensitive self absorbed assses, I am all for free speech, but it should be tempered with human decency and compassion, neither of which they exhibit.

As much as I disagree with these disturbed people, they have constitutional rights.

Free speech, and the Freedom of assembly.
