the black around the icons is the color of the desktop...go into windows desktop settings

Just right click right from the desktop and click properties when display properties comes up. hit the tab for appearances hit the tab for advanced at the bottom of appearances...click the black part of that scree, and the word desktop should appear in the tab for item...also the color tile next to that tab should be black.

click that color tab, and choose anoher color of your choosing..another color should blend in with the background you have to make the blocks around the icons disappear

Set your screen saver to none/blank/off, or whatever the option is for no screen saver and see what happens. Do the same for wallpapers. I can't recall how you get to those options in XP (right click on desktop...?). In Vista it's a right click on the desktop and the open the option for display properties.
