It's worse than that. If you read the Vatican document (link in the article), ordaining a woman is punishable by excommunication without any statute of limitations. Priests who rape children may be merely defrocked and there is a statute of limitations so they may suffer no punishment if they get away with it long enough.

You didn't understand the context. The church leaders were not talking about which is worse. Obviously, it is a horrendous crime to rape a child and only a violation of church law to ordain a woman.

The question under consideration is whether molestation or ordaining women are both offenses to merit excommunication without ecclesiastical trial, and the answer was yes.
