Help with self publishing?
For anyone who has self published before (mainly children's books)...what is the best way to go about doing so? What are costs? How long is the process? Are the costs worth it, or is it better to seek out a publishing company?

Take a look at createspace.com. It is the site for Amazon's publishing company, and is free. They list your book on Amazon.com, but they won't promote it.

Mama,
I self-published my first book and it cost me a few bucks. You'll have to do the advertising yourself with the exception of Amazon and Barnes & Noble. Most of your self-publishers will get your work on to those online markets.
I put my ads in a few magazines, local and hometown newspapers. I also put a blog up on the web with my books and pages of writing help for new authors. PJ's Storytelling
Be care of vanity publishers. They will publish anything and everything and you will not be pleasantly pleased most of the times. Get a book or two on self-publishing and read through it carefully.
Here's a good website to check out, too.
