Good non-mac computer?

I will be a freshman in college next year and would like a laptop that is not a mac, and hopefully doesn't cost a fortune.

price range is under a grand, hopefully under $800

i hope I can get one with

-a backlight keyboard

-4+ hours of battery life

- preferably an i5 processor , but i3 is ok too

- graphics card is just a bonus

- warranty

- windows 7

any suggestions?

I suggest you buy a Compaq 610. I got Windows 7 Ultimate and I got it for freshmann year [highschool] but I guess it doesnt matter much. It costs under $800 though...something around $600. [you can save money, yeay :P]

I've just started using it [got it yesterday] so i cant give a full review, but I found one for you online

    Hope I helped, Goodluck :)

Virtually every single computer comes with some kind of graphics card. Otherwise there wouldn't be any display at all. I assume you mean something like a 3D gaming card.

Backlit keyboard is going to be a bit difficult to find in this price range, but you might find a computer that has it as an option.

All computers are going to come with Windows 7 now.

i5s and i3s are totally in your price range, so that shouldn't be an issue.

Battery life is going to be dependent on a couple things, including battery size and computer usage. Most custom laptops have an option to buy a larger battery to give you more power.

As such, I'd recommend Asus laptops (if you want to get the gaming graphics card) or Sony/Dell/HP (In that order) if you want the other features (as they offer custom configurations from their respective websites)

Definitely go for the dell studio 15-

    it has an i5

    back lit option

    dedicated 1gb graphics card

    500gb hard drive

    windows 7

ok warranty- i recommend upping to their premium warranty

I could spend a little more dough so I went to the dell studio 17 but it is just the studio 15's big brother

I absolutely love my new laptop

    Good luck in college
