After birth, how long did you wait to go back to work?

This is a little early to be asking since if I'm only about 4 weeks along, but I'm curious.

This pregnancy is a little unplanned. I just finished my masters degree in education and have really been looking forward to my first year as a kindergarten teacher. I'd be due in April, which means if I take off two months I miss the end of my first school year :-/.

How long did you wait?

Update:

I guess the past year of my life has been spent thinking about being a teacher. I'm sure when April actually comes I'll be excited, but being "Mom" hasn't kicked in as much as being "teacher" has.

I waited 6 years until she was in school. I then opened up a home daycare so I could continue to be a stay at home mom and make money at the same time.

8 months. We budget crunched a bit so I could stay home longer. Totally worth it !

My suggestion is to stop working around a month before you're due, because you will be huge and tired and not have the resistance to run around after a bunch of kids all day. Then take the summer off and come back for the new year. That's what I'd do anyway !

It depends on how you have your baby, and your doctor will tell you how long to wait. My best friend had a natural birth and her doctor (which was also my doctor) told her to wait 6 weeks (after her 6 week check up with him to make sure everything healed alright). I had a c section and my doctor told me I had to wait 8 weeks before going back to work, because c sections have a longer healing time. I had an 8 week check up and he released me to go back to work. Some jobs require the doctor to give you a note releasing you to come back to work.

I had a 12-week FMLA leave with both my kids. With my first I had to take leave early, and she was only 8-1/2 weeks old when I went back. My second was 11 weeks old. I have zero regrets about taking that time off.

    Good luck!

I waited 3 months to go back to work. I don't anyone who went back before 8 weeks. The longer you can take the better. Going back to work is hard, and I only went back part time.

You could go back for the last two weeks of school. I'd take 6-8 weeks off. Once baby comes, you won't want to leave him/her, trust me!

once you have your baby you wont want to go to work any time soon. Plus if you do decide to go work in a child care centre your baby could go with you. I started studying this year so my son has been in daycare for 6months now from the age of 19months, and it was very hard to leave him.
