Why is there so much controversy over the term African American, when nobody questions Asian Americans?

    Yes, that's strange...

It seems there will always be some people who refuse to be "labelled", no matter how we call them.

I know some French Blacks ( West Indies) who start a quarell just because someone used the english term "Black", although they love to use this word...Some strongly identify to their Black (Caribbean )culture, whereas some others "reject" it and see themselves as French only.

The same type of sterile discussions probably exist in the US as well...

Because the media rarely focuses on Asian American community. They have their own debates about whether or not the term "Asian American" should be hyphenated or not.

by using fact the better suitable of "united statesa." is approximately being united in a love of liberty as a subculture and as way of life. So American Nationalism is approximately putting petty non secular and ethnic divisions at the back of you and judging human beings via their character - not the colour of their dermis - or what god they pray to. i could be stated as an ethnic German....yet I have no administration over that - i won't be in a position to be happy with that. yet i'm an American via selection. by using fact i like what united statesa. stands for. by using fact i like each and all the best issues it has carried out. and that i like that united statesa. (unlike multiple worldwide places) whilst it makes a mistake, admits what it did incorrect, and tries (not constantly effectively - yet constantly essentially) to not make a similar mistake returned. If i did not sense that way approximately united statesa., i could be on the 1st flight out. and that i'm a nationalist; sure. yet not blind. the U. S. has carried out incorrect...each united states of america has. And as a nationalist, i think of extremely everyone could love their very own united states of america particularly others.

    I agree 100% with AFR-CAM (De Bafang)

its not just people I think its mostly white people who want African Americans to be called Black just because they are called white.

and on yahoo I see people whining about how its "double standards" and "its not fair".

its just because every other race has a permanent title... what i mean is you dont hear people going back and forth calling asians "Yellow people" or are they Asian?

    no they dont.

But people will always try to say that we are just "Black people" and i think alot of people are brainwashes by all that.

and they say because we were here for years so were just black. thats so stupid.

its not like we dont know where were from. people know that slaves were brought from Africa.

Its so frustrating for me that we cant even keep that little bit of our culture by getting to keep our name.... why cant we just be African? or if people prefer African American.

There are way less Asian Americans. And I really don't think a lot of them care haha

  • I don't get it either.

Same thing with Hispanic American, Arab American....even Native American.

It seems like black people are always compared to white people. Because white do not have such term, they want black people to not have one either.

Apparently, some black people don't like being called black and other black people don't like being called African-American.

    There's controversy?

There is controversy with everything black people do. We can't do anything without people questioning it.

We can't even eat a flipping watermelon without people taunting us about it for years on end.

Because Asians haven't been in America since the 1500's.
