Is having nonexistent credit a bad thing when looking to rent a house?

I have never had a credit card because I haven't needed one.

One landlord was astonished to hear this, but didn't seem to think it was a bad thing - she then proceeded to bail on me because I took a little too long to call her back.

I'm just wondering if having no credit is bad like having bad credit? Still looking to rent and it's making me kinda nervous...

Update:

I do have a checking and savings account. Is that good?

Update 2:

also, i have $2500 in these accounts.

Bad credit is worse, but to a private landlord, no credit can be scary as well. Having no credit tells a landlord that you've never handled money. You have no checking account, savings account, or credit card to show a responsible pattern with money. You've never made payments of any kind, which makes some landlords wonder if you'll be able to handle it.

Having no credit and then "taking a little too long to call back", assuming we aren't talking about a crazy person expecting you to call back within 5 minutes, would tell me as a landlord that you aren't serious about renting a place and that you take things on your own schedule. This doesn't appeal to a landlord who is going to want rent ON the first of the month, not a few days later when the tenant gets around to it.

    IMHO.

Get a checking account and a savings account. Build credit by getting a store/gas credit card and paying it off each and everytime you use it.

There's no reason for you to run out and open up far more credit than you need, but having one card and paying it off monthly will to amazing things for your credit.

Edit: This is better than nothing, if it's showing up on your credit reports. It does show that you do comprehend how money works. You showing me a few months of bank statements would be plenty for me if you had no other credit, but the not returning phone calls would still be a serious concern.

No credit is a MILLION times better than having bad credit.

I see it as a positive thing - you never lived outside your means.

If she bailed out on you - she is a fool.

You would have made a fine tenant.

Did she ask for anything else like employment proof, paycheck, bank statements, anything?

All she wanted was credit? - then you don't want her as a landlady.

Note: Getting a card because you need one is the worst possible reason.

Here is the secret to those that hold the top scores.

They get a card or two.

They use it for things they need like food or gas,

They pay in full each month.

    = They don't NEED credit

People that don't NEED credit have the best credit in the world.
