Want to run a marathon, should I start with a 5k or 10k?

Hi I want to run a marathon…I think it is an amazing accomplishment. BUT the problem is I can barely run a mile…my best time for a mile is like 7:15….I feel like a 5k is too small and Is a waste of 10-15weeks of training… can I handle a 10k if I give myself about 13weeks to train? or should I just do the 5k

Update:

Ok sounds good, I said 10-15k weeks because I read a website that had a training schedule for 13 week 10k I didn't know if that was good or bad…I thought the 5k was ridiculous but w/e

Why not do both, a 5k in 10 weeks and the 10k in 13 weeks.

take it at your own pace and see the future that the marathon is the goal - you have to do small runs to get there and build on that.

First goal is to be able to run 30 minutes non stop and then work from there.

7:15 mile is not slow by the way - most marathon runners run it in 4 hours or 9 minute miles or there abouts

Wow.. you should be able to do a 5k without ANY training, and a 10k with like a few weeks.

just do the 5k first before you do the 10k just so you make sure you are ready for the big 10k

Idk about the states, but in Canada we have these clinics called 'the Running Room' and my friend trained for a 10k in only 8 weeks with no previous running experience. They help you find proper shoes, and proper running techniques. You can do it! Aim high!

you should try training for the 10K, but if you dont reach that, then do the 5K.

thats really the way to go
