When Socrates was about to die, his disciples started worrying about funeral and asked Socrates what to do.
Socrates said, the Enemies are giving poison to kill me & you people are planning how to perform funeral which means every one is concentrating on my death than worrying about my life!

Because the words are attributed to Socrates, I am unable to guess in my secular way. The wise ones never yield to emotions. The one who accepted poison with equanimity should be trying to convey some last minute message rather than simply chiding them for their silly obsession with rituals!!
words of Ross sets me thinking while kandasamy's comments sound too deep for my immediate analysis!!
usually spiritualists ask people to think of the looming death and spend the limited life usefully, to refine oneself, leave something worthwhile to the society and be remembered among the people after they are gone. But philosophers are prone to think differently: perhaps the great philosopher saint was trying to say that we should care more about the life on hand than waste in the contemplation of an inevitable end!! idk.

when we die, that's it. Appreciate those you have now for tomorrow u may not have them. After watching some close family members die, and my beloved grandmother, I vowed to spend a lot of time with those I love and to continue doing volunteer work to help those less fortunate.

I would say that it is understandable that the people around him were occupied with his death given the circumstances.

But, he knew:
" Worry never robs tomorrow of its sorrow, it only saps today of its joy."
