Can Corrupt USB go bad because of an OS? Or is it just getting old?

My USB seems to start failing on all ports with the exception of the last two til just a few minutes ago. I heard that Win XP corrupts after heavy use on the HD, that it's good to reinstall it every six months, I can live with that but my question is that because of it's corruption, can my USB go bad because of it?

Update:

Nah, Ive used the devices for a long time. I did get a new Microsoft Ergo Keyboard, it's okay but It makes me wonder itf it's sucking a bit more power away from the other ports.

I do want to format soon anyway see if it's it.

I should check if there are updates to USB Drivers, not sure.

Update 2:

if my motherboard had over heated, that would be interesting, it runs really really cool but you do have something there. Since the case is always open perhaps there is a junk load of dust I was unaware of.

My next guess was that my motherboard is going bad, I built this thing 5 years ago. still runs high end games really well which is pretty cool.

I dont think the OS has any effect. But you could be over heating it, or they could be connected improperly. The USB is a source of power so it can short circut, overheat, or one of the prongs inside could be damaged. Id just open op yur Comp, and take a quick gander, it could be as is of a fix as reattaching.

I would make sure that your USB ports aren't going bad because of a flaky cheap USB device.

You can always reformat it, but I've never heard of this.

If your usb ports are not working it most likely has something to do with the motherboard.
