Anyone have any ideas on why my poor dog is so itchy?

She went to the vet today, because she has been scratching excessively near her tail and managed to "chew" holes in herself. Almost $400 dollars later, we only know what it's not. It's NOT fleas, lice, parasites, mange, poison ivy, oak, sumac, hot spots, or an allergic reaction to anything, mosquito bites (or any other insect bite). He did a thorough exam, a skin scrape, expressed her anal glands, and my husband said he even dragged a giant book out to look through. lol

He put her on antibiotics (open sores), an anti-inflammatory and an antihistamine (which I'm hesitant to give her - it's not an allergic reaction, why on earth load her up with that?). He also suggested giving her a bath once a week in shampoo, Ecto-Soothe by VIRBAC. Won't that just irritate her skin more?

If anyone has any suggestions, I'll be glad to bring them up with my vet. As of right now, he's stumped.

Update:

She doesn't have worms, nothing has changed-so I don't believe it's anxiety, and she is fed Innova EVO Red Meat Small Bites and has been for her entire adult life, so I very much doubt it is her food. But thank you!!!!!!! Keep 'em coming! :)

Update 2:

Oh yeah, and she was only bathed every three months or so anyway, with an oatmeal based shampoo.

The Ecto-soothe is oatmeal based, here's the link: http://www.virbacvet.com/preventic/product/ecto_so...

Update 3:

Also, my husband said he treated her for mange, but I don't know which kind, because I wasn't there - she picked the one of the two days I have to work long hours lol

Sorry I keep adding on!!!

Thanks for the link to mange, that was really informative, and I'm going to call the vet tomorrow to see exactly which form of mange he is treating for.

It could be sarcoptic mange. I know that's probably why the vet did the skin scrape, but scraping fails to find the mites roughly half the time. Often, the vet has to treat for sarcoptic mange and see if the dog gets better, confirming the diagnosis.

This happened when my dog had sarcoptic mange, and the treatment worked. We were also told to use Benadryl, and it did help substantially with the itching. It's very safe when used properly and will probably help. The vet probably advised an antihistamine to stop her from tearing new holes in herself and to let the old ones heal.

Here's a link on sarcoptic mange:

In an insanely itchy dog, vets would usually consider sarcoptic mange as incessant itching and scratching is the primary symptom. But not all of them would go ahead and treat for it if they didn't find the mites in the scraping-the so-called Maybe Mange test. Worth discussing with your vet.

The other possibility would be that she's developed an allergy to her food. That's a lot harder to sort out. And yes, the dog can develop the allergy after eating the same food for quite some time!

ETA: Since beef is the #1 allergen to dogs, it could well be the food. The first ingredient in your food is beef.

    Could it be anxiety-related?

My friend's dog had major anxiety issues and would chew her feet like crazy when she was home alone.

She takes anxiety medication now and is perfectly fine.

That's the only thing I can think of. I'm not sure what Ecto-Soothe is, but maybe give her an oatmeal bath?

Sorry, it's not very helpful! Hope she feels better soon (:

I have several, which will probably get me TDs, but I don't care as I know these things will help because they did my dogs.

    1. If you're feeding her cheap dogfood that has grain in it, especially corn, get a better quality brand of food and gradually change her over to it. Dogs are not herbivores, and grain is only a filler. Added to that, cheap grocery store brands of "foods" are mostly waste products and yes, other dead dogs and cats. I feed mine Blue Buffalo.

    2. There is a shampoo and spray you can get that literally saved one of my rescue's life; had I been the kind of person who gives up easily she would be dead. She was nearly hairless and itched constantly, steroids only helped a little and they are bad anyhow, and my vets recommended putting her down, because they said a dog in that bad of shape never recovers. They were wrong. I looked until I found Eqyss MicroTek and used it. She is perfectly recoated and itch free now, and has been for several years- and she is probably 13 or 14 years old.

Maybe she has an allergy to processed dog food. Research raw meat diets.

Could be you are bathing her too much as it is. No more than every month or two.
