resources without imagination makes a barbarian, but imagination without resources makes a idle philosopher. Resources and imagination combined equal a civilized, well-rounded gentleman.

education without intelligence = self importance
intelligence and education equally balanced = gentleman

I think it means an ideal man should include strength and courage as well as a sophistication when it comes to intellectual, artistic and social concerns.
It isn't that great of a quote to be honest with you.
