Is it illegal to openly plot against the government?

sometimes when I'm bored I think of hypothetical assassinations or terrorist attacks...and how they could be conducted...and how an individual would carry it out. Not that I intend on being a terrorist... in fact I plan to do something "counter-these activities"...but I heard somewhere that in order to stop a someone like that, you gotta think like someone like that. Just want to know before I end up saying something stupid in a text message, email, or conversation... phone, or in-person. ....and it being taken the wrong way

You don't have to worry about it being taken the wrong way. If you spark anyone's interest they'll investigate you more thoroughly than you probably would imagine. If you're legitimately a non-threat, then it will become obliviously obvious....

Yea, i just coined that phrase. YES!

Technically it's called "Treason" and it carries the maximum punishment of the death penalty, although most now get life imprisonment instead.

However, it's harmless if you're only hypothesizing. But I wouldn't use text, email, or phone to do it as the international security agencies in every country all have automated systems that filter messages containing words like "bomb", etc. and known terrorist code words. So if you were to go seriously into it, you might get a knock on the door from FBI in the US or Special Branch in the UK to check you out.

Also you could end up on a No-Fly List, or on a Selective Screening (more in-depth searches at security) list if you travel by air alot and are discovered to be engaged in plotting.

Yes, if you say that you are plotting to blow up something, the police and/or government can arrest you. You can get arrested for "Conspiring to blow up something" or whatever. Actually, if you have evidence that you are going to blow up something, like things to make bombs, then you can be arrested. For saying it, it's not likely, unless you are a terror suspect. But I can shout I'm going to blow up the White House, and probably no one will come over and put me in jail, but a police officer might ask a question.

Yes, it is conspiracy to commit a crime... illegal! Although I believe we all do this on various levels. Its all part of being human!
