i assume u are using windows? u have 2 categories of files: those YOU copied (pics, music, programs installed) and files windows used and u dont need anymore.

    YOUR stuff:

1- scan through YOUR files u know of and look for things you dont want (SHIFT-DELETE to bypass the recycle bin or burn them to DVD).

2 - clear the recycle bin BUT make sure there is nothing in there u want anymore.

3 - u might have duplicate files - ie, the same movie twice, maybe even the same movie twice with different names? (use a free utility to scan/list/delete duplicate files.) A few movies of few thousand files can add up!

4 - Goto control panel and look for programs you dont need anymore. ESP games, games can take up HUGE amounts of disk space, sometime 12gb each! Uninstall what you dont use or needs.

5 - There might be another user on the same PC with their own files? U might need to repeat ALL these steps for each user (logout/login). When u are sure u have removed what you dont want and have what you do - lets move in deeper and look for invisible space munchers.

    Windows stuff:

Open windows explorer and click Tools -> Folder Options -> View tab: check the following: 'show hidden files and folders', AND uncheck 'hide protected operating system files) - click yes on popup - click apply/Ok to exit. (this can should be undone when u have finished :) On win7/Vista this might be somewhere else...

Tip: If you run the disk cleanup wizard (do this for each user account), it will show u temp files u can delete. Sometimes you cant delete ALL of these as they are locked. U can also download a free utility for disk cleanup - just search Google for it. such utils provide a interface that list sizes of programs installed, temp usage (temp folders are used temporarily and stupidly windows doesn't always delete them after its done leaving alot lying around!).

Anyway - u can either use the windows built in disk cleanup wizard or browse to users folder (see above), c:\documents and setting\joe soap\local settings\Temp and delete everything in there.

General notes: its always recommended to have a minimum of 10-15% free space on ANY drive. if you cannot free up enough, either burn some less used files to dvd (5 Dvd's = + 20GB), thats plenty! OR go and buy a new hard drive with as much capacity as you can afford, (sometimes you get a drive with over a hundred gigabytes extra for almost nothing!).

If u want performance buy seagate drives, they are fast! get these specs: sata2/32mb cache/7200rpm (make sure your pc is SATA else get IDE highest chache/also 7200rpm). Drives are sooo cheap these days. Find a Pc shop who can mirror the old one to the new, shouldn't cost much at all, or you can try yourself, its easy if u have some experience with plugging in hard drives and booting with cd's! Hirens boot cd (download the iso and burn to a blank) is an all in one - it comes with norton ghost (and MANY other apps) . if you buy a new drive and it is plugged in and shows up in bios, u can boot with this cd, run norton ghost (option 2 - 2 - 8 usually), choose clone disk to disk (select old FIRST and new Second) - minutes later u can pull out your old drive and boot up with your new drive and enjoy the free space. once u are SURE you are running off the new drive, plug in the old one, set correct boot priority else you'll boot off old again! and wipe the old one clean as a backup drive :)

You need to keep deleting files you don't want or need anymore. You can also move files to cd,dvd or removable harddrives. Your other option is to add another drive to your machine. Where you can add a drive is dependant on available connections and physical space for the drive in your computer. With USB hard drives priced where they are I would recommend getting one of those and moving over as much as you can. Since your OS is likely on C: you need to try to keep a gigabyte free if possible.

You can buy an outside backup hard drive for it, transfer all your files to it and then erase the same from your pc so you will have the space you need. Usually the ITunes, photos and music takes all the space from the computer so if you transfer all of these to your outside backup hard drive it will work much better. That is what I did with mine. I went to Office Depot with the same question and they advise me to buy more memory space and a hard drive now it works just fine...
