Is posting "Edit" in an answer against the Guidelines?

According to Yahoo Answers. I read the community guidelines and in cheating, It says posting "Edit" in an answer is against the Community Guidelines. I see lots of people post edit, and their answers still remain there. So is it ok to put "Edit" or not?

To answer your question I would have said no it was not against the guidelines to add an edit to your answer if you are giving further information for the asker. I would have thought it was wrong to add an edit if you are chatting. Guess I am wrong if it is in the guidelines, whoops for me because I am guilty of adding an edit with further information.

Thank you for letting us know, I will put this question in my watchlist to see the other answers that you receive.

Yahzmin and Sombra give you the correct information:

Posting the word "edit" to indicate "additional or changes" to your answer is NOT against the rules. Other words such as "add", * or ---> are also often used to indicate such additions.

What you (and others who replied) are misunderstanding is the violation caused by using the word "edit" as the ENTIRE answer, usually used as a temporary place holder while a real answer is composed, which later replaces the word "edit". This is most often seen in avatar games and in Qs where it's noted "10pts to first to answer" and such.

You are confusing the two completely different uses for the word; the allowable use of the word to indicate additions/changes to your answer with the violating use of the word as a place holder.

To be clear: Posting the word "edit" to be used as a place holder while you are off composing an answer IS a violation and can be reported as such.

Posting the word "edit" to add comments to an already existing answer is NOT a violation and a perfectly legal use of the word.

Follow the link given by Yahzmin for the official distinction.

I'll have to find the reference, but what they are referring to is posting ONLY the word "Edit" as an answer. Not posting it to indicate additional material being added.

When avatar games were at their peak, people would post simply the word 'edit' to indicate that they would return and post their answer later. This is a violation for 'not an answer', and avatar games, of course, are also a violation.

But using the word to indicate that a good, real answer has been edited is not a violation. Confusing, but yeah, YA IS that.

<EDIT: OK, here is the reference and the link is below:

"Answering with "edit" or "." or any such answer to in order to control your place on the question page."

NOTE how it is phrased - "IN ORDER TO CONTROL YOUR PLACE". Back when YA first started, when questions went to voting, answers posted in the order they were posted. So the FIRST person had an unfair advantage when voting came, because people often simply picked the first answer. Now, they are randomly shuffled to stop that, but the restriction on this type of 'placeholding' is still there in the HELP section.>

I think what you're referring to is the way some folks like to 'place-save' their answer ... they answer fast using only the word 'edit' in order to get their answers in first or second, and submit.

THEN they reopen their answer and type (or just as likely, copy/paste) the REAL answer. That is definitely against the rules.

There's no harm in using the word 'Edit' to let the asker (and others) know that you have added new information to the answer since submitting it originally (I use the word 'ADDED' when I do that). We ARE given the option to 'edit' our answers, and I think it's deceiving to give a short, 1 or 2 word answer (initially), and then come back with a 7-paragraph essay unless we DO state that we have added to our original answers.

It is called 'place holding, is deemed cheating, and thusly is NOT allowed.

Thus..... anyone that plays avatar games gets a nice TOS violation when they play. Pretty high price just to play, huh???

Please understand... if you leave your answer alone, and type ' EDIT' then add additional information, that is NOT, by definition, place holding. Posting EDIT or "Above " Below" as the original answer gets you pasted for place holding, and rightfully so..

To the best of my knowledge no it isn't if it was I've broken the rules 100's of times.I guess I've done it alright because I've always done it to add more information I don't believe it ever changed my position in the list of answers.
