Lens for Portrait Photography?

Typically, what type of lens would be best when doing portrait photography?

Update:

I also wanted to add that I have a Nikon D90.

    With what camera?

With a 35mm camera or full format digital camera, an 85mm f/1.4 is a top choice.

With a typical digital camera (cropped sensor), a 50mm f/1.4 would be the approximate equivalent.

I have a 60mm f/2.8 macro lens that works well on my D300 for portraits.

As a rule for the DSLR a 80 mm to 150mm lens are used. They give good shape and details and show the persons depth very good. A 50mm will work but it makes people look Little bigger than they are. In Weddings I use a zoom and zoom as close to 100 as I can unless a group them go to smaller zoom. and the 80 to 150 range get the flash away for a better color and light balance.
