Should James Blake retire this year?

I know some of you (such as Jay) are pissed about reading this question, so for the record I actually am a James Blake fan. He was actually my 1st favourite player (then Djokovic, and now it's Baghdatis)

His ranking has dropped to 115. His record this year is a measly 8-9 and he hasn't even made it to the finals of a tournament. He was embarrased at Wimbledon, losing to Robin Haase in straights the first round, and he also had a spat with Pam Shriver.

To further strengthen my point, I just recently read Inside Tennis magazine. Included in that issue was an article about James Blake titled: "At a Crossroads". It is identified that he does have/had a knee injury, and it seems pretty serious. He says he retweaked his knee in Eastbourne against Julien Benneteau. Blake has also refused to take surgery, painkillers, or anti-inflammatories. Yes, I am well aware of the fact that he has battled a major back problem, shingles, and a broken neck (or was it a vertebrate?). However, he added:

"If it doesn't get better soon, I'm not sure how much longer I want to play in pain."

I hate to be the breaker of bad news but I personally think that he needs to retire from tennis. My suggestion for James Blake: retire at the 2010 US Open.

Update:

I also read James Blake's autobiography by the way. So i know what he's been through haha

Update 2:

@David -- You were right XD

I never new you were a James Blake fan!

But there is no way I am mad at you for asking this question. James Blake has had a rough year and a half. For me it doesn't seem that long ago when he was in the Paris (I believe it was Paris, maybe not) semi finals (or was it the finals? my memory is foggy, hehe) against Tsonga near the end of 2008. If he won that match, he would have had a place in the year end championships. Well, he lost, and it's been downhill since. 2008 was such a sad year for him, with that AND the Olympic situation against Gonzalez.

James has had great success and great failure in his career. He's had peaks and valleys. He made it to #4 in the world being the highest ranked American at a point of time. He should be proud of that. Although he has been some what of an underachiever at slams (never making it past the quarterfinals), I think James could look back at his career with a smile on his face. Especially since he has faced such adversity with his big injury and all. He has also has become pretty popular in the states, despite his ranking being out of the top 100, he is still shown on US Open Series commercials. He was one of People Magazine's sexiest men alive, he should be proud.

Do I want him to retire, no. Do I understand why he might retire, of course. Would I be mad, no. But I just don't think he's done. He probably should have gotten surgery already, but it's never too late. He could still get knee surgery, and be back. He's only 30, my example is always Tommy Haas who made it to a Grand Slam semi last year, in his 30's. Also Jurgen Melzer did this year at the French Open, and he's fairly old. Nothing would make me happier than seeing Blake in the semifinals of the US Open. I think he still has it in him. But what he needs to do is get surgery, OR lose weight. He needs to look at Andy Roddick and Mardy Fish. Both have lost significant amounts of weight, and improved as a result of it. If James Blake still has passion for tennis, he would get to the gym, and burn off weight.

Of course I may come off as over optomistic, but I believe in James. However, I don't know if James believes in himself.

I say as long as he still enjoys competing, he should keep playing. It's a privilege to do what you love for a living (and earn a good deal of money while doing it). Let the critics say what they want. Yes, injuries have troubled him and he's slowed down, but if he can still keep up with the grind of tennis and still has that passion left, he should continue until he loses this and knows when it's time to retire. I also read about how he doesn't like to take anti-inflammatories. It's kind of strange but everyone has their preferences. I wonder if he would be better off if he took them.

I think that if he doesn't have any intentions to try to find his way out of the slump that he's in, yes, if not, then no. If you want something really badly, and you're willing to fight for it, anything can happen.

I think he should...His peak was a really really long time ago...Since 2006 he hasn't really found any good form...He is 30,he is already a tennis veteran...His ranking has dropped to 115,he is losing to losers...So...My final answer is YES!
