Can anyone tell me without being to vague what the Psych Ops job in the Army involves?

PSYOPS deals with the dissemination of information to help achieve mission goals. To do this, they use three different types of operation - White, Gray and Black PSYOPS.

White is overt - imagine a political advert for a Congressman - paid for by the politcal party. "Hey, this guy is groovy, and you should vote for him!! Paid for by the Umptysquat Party." It's totally legitimate and legal.

Gray and Black are covert - secretive.

Black is easiest to understand. Imagine someone who had a grudge against that Congressman who creates a website that LOOKS like it came from the Anti-Umptysquat Party, and he posts things like, "Hey, this guy is a loon and eats babies and puppies! Won't someone think of the puppies!! Paid for by the Anti-Umptysquat Party." This only APPEARS to be legit, and when it comes down to accusations, this guy has deniability, "I didn't say it, it was the AUP!!"

Gray is most commonly used of the covert types - and is fodder for rumors. The guy that hates the Congressman will go tell his Aunt Millie that the Congressman eats babies and puppies - because he knows that Aunt Millie has 42,000 friends on Facebook and ALWAYS forwards e-mails and updates the lates gossip. Before you know it, EVERYONE knows that the Congressman eats babies and puppies... even though it isn't true.

For combat, this would be like this:

White: (Pro America) Drop your weapons and you'll be treated well, and your children will be able to grow up in a great country with a wonderful government! We are Americans!

Gray: (Pro America) Pssst... did you hear that the Taliban leaders don't follow Mohammad's (Blessed be His name!) teachings? They don't follow the Quran!

Black: (Pro Taliban) The CBNBABNC News source is reporting that Lichtenstein has found three never-before seen videos of Coalition forces beating innocent civilians. The viciousness is horrid and sensitive viewers may want to vomit as we show the footage.

"The purpose of psychological operations (PSYOP) is to demoralize the enemy by causing dissension and unrest among his ranks, while at the same time convincing the local population to support American troops. PSYOP units also provide continuous analysis of the attitudes and behavior of enemy forces to the tactical commanders in the field, so they can develop, produce and employ propaganda in a successful manner."

Basically uses non-violent means to persuade enemies and neutrals to support the US operations.
