What is a good substitute for ground turkey?

I have been buying ground turkey and using it instead of ground beef but I've been hearing that ground turkey really isn't good for you either. What is a good alternative?

TVP or the ground turkey that is labeled extra lean (VERY low fat) is good for you. Or you can grind chicken breast in and put half turkey.

Personally I think that using extra lean turkey meat is best or you will sacrifice the flavour if its needed in the dish you are making.. Actually turkey is very good for you, tbh its about variety, if you eat lean meat a couple of times a week and the main part of your diet is wholegrain and veg, then you are doing great.

lean ground beef or veal with 7% or less fat. look for turkey that is ground white meat with 7% or less fat. or go with ground tofu like stuff - tastes a bit strange at first but you can get used to it. Or there's ground chicken available too. Depends on the recipe. The ground light meat doesn't offer a lot of flavor and in some cases the tofu can taste better than ground chicken if you buy it already seasoned.

Regular "ground turkey" has both white and dark turkey in the grind so has as much fat as "lean ground beef" (7%)...it may also contain skin, which is fatty, can't remember.

The package labeled "ground turkey breast" however has much less fat (1%) and is made only with the white meat (and no skin) so is healthier than plain "ground turkey."

As mentioned, you can buy your own chicken or turkey (or any meat) parts, then grind them yourself with a food processor or an actual meat grinder (or meat grinder atttachment for a Kitchen Aid mixer, etc). Or some butchers will do that for you if you ask.

You can also use vegetable substitutes like textured soybean products or portabello mushrooms, etc, instead of using ground meats.

Or you can just mix any of the ground meat with fillers of various kinds so you'll be getting less of it no matter which version you use ...for example, bread or crumbs/etc of any type, or grains like rice, or other veggies, or Portabellos or texture soy protein products or ground lentils, etc, etc.

One good thing for making tender "meatballs" btw is to add bread that's been soaked in milk as a filler.

And just remember to season the less-fatty types of meat or other ingredients well since you'll want to compensate for the lack of fat-flavor, etc.

After you have seasoned it, there should not be much of a taste difference. My picky daughter actually prefers ground turkey since it is not as "rubbery" as ground beef. Just be sure to use "lean" ground turkey to reap the health benefits. Not all ground turkey is lean and some of it can have just as much fat as ground beef. To help camoflage the color of the different meat, try a browning agent like Kitchen Bouquet in addition to your taco seasoning. Good suggestion by one of the other posters to try quesadillas also.

Ground Turkey Breast. It's better for you than regular ground turkey, which has all the parts in it. Ground chicken is also good.

If you want to eat truly healthy, lose body fat consistently, normalize your blood pressure, cholesterol levels, prevent cancer, and even boost your brain health and energy levels, you may have heard all over the news that the Paleo Diet has been found to be one of the best methods of achieving all of these benefits compared to any other popular “fad” diets out there. Go here https://tr.im/paleorecipes

The truth is that the Paleo Diet will never be considered a fad because it’s just simply the way that humans evolved to eat over approximately 2 million years. And eating in a similar fashion to our ancestors has been proven time and time again to offer amazing health benefits, including prevention of most diseases of civilization such as cancer, heart disease, alzheimers, and other chronic conditions that are mostly caused by poor diet and lifestyle. One of the biggest misunderstandings about the Paleo Diet is that it’s a meat-eating diet, or a super low-carb diet. This is not true

    Goanna meat.

I'm sure that's what the Mexicans use!

Perhaps Tofu, if you're really health conscious.

TVP: textured vegetable protein. It crumbles just like any other ground meat, but its vegetarian, and good for you!
