Norton 360 v4.0 actually has the lowest system requirements of any commercial antivirus software and does not slow your computer down at all. I get the feeling that some people have used older versions that were pretty resource hungry or haven't actually tried it themselves.
Kaspersky is also really good and has slightly higher detection rates than Norton, however, Norton 360 incorporates a software firewall, data backup, identity safe, phishing filter etc. and it pretty much runs itself.
Not saying the free ones aren't okay but at the end of the day Symantec is the biggest security software publisher and they have hundreds of software engineers cranking out updates and virus definitions as often as they are found/made - the free ones just don't get that kind of attention. (Saying that NOD32 is also pretty kickass but the interface is a little messier in my opinion)

Well, that's a very open question and its answer is going to be open as well. Most people have been using a different anti virus for years and tend to stick to it. A year and a half ago I needed a new anti virus, so I made a search on available ones and compared which one was the most secure (without taking care of how much it might cost). I decided on BitDefender and have not regretted my decision.
On the other hand, most cable providers would give you a free anti virus subscription to either McAfee or Norton. Find out if you have that option and it includes all the existing computers in your household. (I know for a fact Comcast provides Norton for free).
Check these sites and then purchase the one that covers your needs the most:

I really like Norton 360 for my PC and wanted to put it on my laptop but Best Buy suggested Kerpasey(sp) and so far since I put it in every time i try to scan my computer i get a blue screen shutdown error so do not bother with any others. I wanted to just put Norton in to both and they said it was to big for the laptop, well i think they just wanted to sell me something, so i am not going to renew it and just stick to my favorite Norton 360 it costs under a hundred dollars a year but you can put it on 3 computers, so my upstairs, downstairs and my laptop are always covered. Good Luck!
