Should Jamie McMurray be considered a great NASCAR driver yet?
Now he has a Daytona 500 and Brickyard 400 on his resume, is McMurray in that discussion yet, after all the people that have won those races are very accomplished drivers, anyone believe McMurray can reach that level.

Not quite yet. He is definitely talented, but has still got plenty of years to race in this sport before he can be known as "great." When you start to throw the word "great" around loosely, it cheapens the meaning when it is used along side the names of Earnhardt and Petty.

EXCELLENT question, I was pondering the same myself. I believe he does have what it takes to be an elite driver, he just hasn't gotten there quite yet. he's still in the 16th position in points (as far as I know) so he hasnt quite proven himself. He's gone through many trials and tribulations and is doing much better than in other seasons. At this point, i would consider him a top-15 driver, so a good one, but not quite a great driver.
Congrats to Chip Ganassi for doing the impossible and winning the Daytona 500, Brickyard 400, AND the Indianapolis 500!!!! (as a team owner)
GO TONY STEWART!

He is not great yet. Yes Spartan he is tied for 16th with Kasey Kahne so he still has some work to do. I think he is great when it comes to turning his fortune around. He wasn't sure where he would be this year and when E and G picked him up and he won right out of the gate everyone thought that he proved that he can contend in this sport and he proved that again this past race. He still has a long way to go to become a great driver but he has all the potential in the world!

He's also won the 600 in Charlotte...another big race. Back in the 60's and 70's individual races used to hold more weight as far as an accomplishment to a driver. If Jamie needs to win a championship if he wants to be looked upon as great by today's standards.

I wouldn't call Jamie a NASCAR great just yet, but I think he has at least as much talent as guys like Kevin Harvick and Ryan Newman, even though they both have won more than Jamie. When Jamie's head is 100% in the game, he always is on par with those two.

any champion of the 500 is a legend in my book, that doesnt mean they are the greatest of all time but they are a legend in their own right just as super bowl champions are, however with a brickyard victory that only futhers it, and also to add to this he also won in only his second race ever, so to me he is a great driver yes

nope..........look at the people who have won those races compaired to jmac.
dale earnhardt
jeff gordon
tony stewart
harvick
dale jarrett
jimmie johnson
all champs of nascar sprint cup, except one, harvick.
all have over 12 wins,most with 20 or more,most with 2 championships,except harvick
jmac is a good driver, but not he caliber of driver of the above mentioned.

There's a lot of "greats" on those lists, and there are also a lot of one-hit wonders.
I've always considered 40 Cup victories as the cut-off of the "All-time Greats" from the also-rans.
So in that sense, Jamie "Bigtime" McMurray's still got a ways to go.

Jamie may not have reached that level to be called Great.
But if he keeps performing the way he is, then you will call him Great.
He has already given his owner something that will be hard to best.

He hasn't won a cup yet so... I'm still betting on Jimmie Johnson to win the cup again this year so no... he did well but thats all he will have this season
