Older horse with drippy swollen sore?

My old boy Rusty (25+) has this sore like thing on his belly. it's just infront of his sheath, nearor on his belly button. it's pobobly about 4-5 inches long, and 3 wide. I'm really concerned. it's red, and has some bloody liquid dripping off a little. it looks a little infected, and I'm really concerned. it is like a scrape, or rub or something, but all hair is gon, and it's very pink and redish.

I flushed it with saline today, and th applied a good disinfectant, and he usually heals well from any cuts that might happen.

my mom found it in the morning, and says it's more swollen and red.

I'll be out in th morning to check on him, and clean it up again.

if it doest Heal fast, or gets worse we are calling th vet.

but I'm scare it could be somehing mor seriouse. Any ideas?

Update:

Ok, so I checked on him this morning. it seems to be likescabbed over sorta. Like it's covered in black (skin?) but it's brittle and crunchy. There's a small hole, where you can still see the red fresh part. it's hot, and still swollen, I'm concerned it could be filled with pus. I'll b checking on him again soon.

Update 2:

Ok, so I checked him again tonight, and the swelling has gone down aloooot and it doesnt feel nearly as warm, I think it is going to heal well whatever it was

Def. have your vet out to check him out. I just read today about "pigeon fever" does it look like an abccess that could have burst?? The stomach, chest, and groin areas are all common areas to show this type of infection. Hopefully its just a sore spot or scrape, but its better to know for sure so give your vet a call. Good Luck!

It could be sweet itch, causing him to rub on something to relieve the irritation. Definately have the vet out. He will probably give you some antibiotics, have you flush it with some meds. You will probably need some Swat - helps keep the flies off and heals at the same time. Good luck!

It could have been irritated by flies or gnats. Is there anything in his pasture that he could have straddled to scratch his belly on? I have an older pony who gets more bothered by flies/gnats than the other horses, and he is also very itchy. He used to get sores along the centerline of his belly, but now he has cushing's and I just leave the hair longer down there when I clip him. I still see him scratching himself, but I think the hair keeps the flies/gnats away more.

It's better to be safe than sorry and I strongly suggest you call the vet.

There are a million things it could be and only a vet can know for sure.

  • he might have rolled and scraped it badly on something sharp, you might want to check the field for anything sharp with flesh and or blood on it. it's a pretty big sore to have, just continue to clean it, if it doesn't heal call the vet. just like you said.
