Jesus Christ (pbuh) never claimed Divinity. what do u think?

One may ask, if both Muslims and Christians love and respect Jesus (pbuh), where exactly is the parting of ways? The major difference between Islam and Christianity is the Christians’ insistence on the supposed divinity of Christ (pbuh). A study of the Christian scriptures reveals that Jesus (pbuh) never claimed divinity. In fact there is not a single unequivocal statement in the entire Bible where Jesus (pbuh) himself says, "I am God" or where he says, "worship me". In fact the Bible contains statements attributed to Jesus (pbuh) in which he preached quite the contrary. The following statements in the Bible are attributed to Jesus Christ (pbuh):

(i) "My Father is greater than I."

[The Bible, John 14:28]

(ii) "My Father is greater than all."

[The Bible, John 10:29]

(iii) "…I cast out devils by the Spirit of God…."

[The Bible, Mathew 12:28]

(iv) "…I with the finger of God cast out devils…."

[The Bible, Luke 11:20]

(v) "I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgement is just; because I seek not my own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me."

[The Bible, John 5:30]

Jesus knows His role in God's life and in His own. Jesus does not say that He is God, nor does He tell anyone to worship Him. However, He does claim divinity to the Father AS HIS SON by saying:

"I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who had given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father's hand. I and the Father are one". (John 10:28-30)

Jesus tells His disciples directly that He and the Father "are ONE", meaning that they share the same Spirit. Jesus does everything THROUGH God as He is asked to. God gave Jesus specific tasks to carry through, such as the fulfillment of the law and the Prophecies. Jesus did exactly as His Father wanted Him to do. The fact that God and Jesus share the same Spirit made it possible for Jesus to carry through these things. He was born into the world "divine" through the Holy Spirit, as God never took away Jesus' Spirit, even in this world.

Jesus also praises God directly Himself:

"I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this was your good pleasure". (Mat 11:25)

Jesus is "praising" God Himself and "worshipping" Him, and holding God in higher esteem. There is no need to ask for worship from others for Himself. Jesus also tells the people to worship God only. He says: "God is spirit, and His worshippers must worship in the Spirit and in truth". (John 4:24)

God also gives Jesus divinity AND distinction from Himself, with others around to witness it:

"As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, "This is My Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased". (Mat 3:16)

Then a cloud appeared and covered them, and a voice came from the cloud: "This is My Son, whom I love. Listen to Him!" (Mark 9:7)

You better read the gospels again a little more carefully.

Matthew 26:63-64 (Jesus replies to the high priest saying that he is the Christ, the Son of God)

John 16:30-31 (Jesus' disciples realize he has come from God and he confirms this belief)

John 8:58 (Jesus says "before Abraham was born, I am!")

If you can read through the gospels and not come away with an understanding that Jesus claimed to be, was perceived by others to be, and was the Son of God, and was crucified for that claim, then there's something wrong with your reading comprehension skills.

He also said I and the Father are one John 10:30. Do a little more research. There are

other places that refers to the trinity of God theFather, the Son and the Holy Spirit all being

    the same.

I don't think it's easy to convince someone that has already made their mind, even they were shown what the origin of trinity was, which was defanately not christian.

Different sourses, you might like to look up.

What is the origin of the Trinity doctrine?

The New Encyclopædia Britannica says: “Neither the word Trinity, nor the explicit doctrine as such, appears in the New Testament, nor did Jesus and his followers intend to contradict the Shema in the Old Testament: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord’ (Deut. 6:4). . . . The doctrine developed gradually over several centuries and through many controversies. . . . By the end of the 4th century . . . the doctrine of the Trinity took substantially the form it has maintained ever since.”—(1976), Micropædia, Vol. X, p. 126.

The New Catholic Encyclopedia states: “The formulation ‘one God in three Persons’ was not solidly established, certainly not fully assimilated into Christian life and its profession of faith, prior to the end of the 4th century. But it is precisely this formulation that has first claim to the title the Trinitarian dogma. Among the Apostolic Fathers, there had been nothing even remotely approaching such a mentality or perspective.”—(1967), Vol. XIV, p. 299.

In The Encyclopedia Americana we read: “Christianity derived from Judaism and Judaism was strictly Unitarian [believing that God is one person]. The road which led from Jerusalem to Nicea was scarcely a straight one. Fourth century Trinitarianism did not reflect accurately early Christian teaching regarding the nature of God; it was, on the contrary, a deviation from this teaching.”—(1956), Vol. XXVII, p. 294L.

According to the Nouveau Dictionnaire Universel, “The Platonic trinity, itself merely a rearrangement of older trinities dating back to earlier peoples, appears to be the rational philosophic trinity of attributes that gave birth to the three hypostases or divine persons taught by the Christian churches. . . . This Greek philosopher’s [Plato, fourth century B.C.E.] conception of the divine trinity . . . can be found in all the ancient [pagan] religions.”—(Paris, 1865-1870), edited by M. Lachâtre, Vol. 2, p. 1467.

John L. McKenzie, S.J., in his Dictionary of the Bible, says: “The trinity of persons within the unity of nature is defined in terms of ‘person’ and ‘nature’ which are G[ree]k philosophical terms; actually the terms do not appear in the Bible. The trinitarian definitions arose as the result of long controversies in which these terms and others such as ‘essence’ and ‘substance’ were erroneously applied to God by some theologians.”—(New York, 1965), p. 899.

The Jews wanted to kill Him because He said He was equal with God

The Father and I are one ( meaning that they work together)

    Try revelation 1:8

"I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, "who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty."

Notice the one to come is the Almighty.

Christ created our universe through His Father.

His Father has appointed Him to be King of His creation. So maybe this title is warranted as He will be King and He did create it( even though his father was there)

See in the creation story, the plural is used. let us create...

so l suppose that's where he says "I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, "who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty."

Jesus also said that He was the.. I am.. of the old testament. To the Jews this was blasphemy because that is who the God of Moses was..On that mountain God said to Moses . I am who I am

Islam only acknowledges Jesus as a prophet. They do not believe what is written about Him in the old or new testament.

Islamists believe Mohammad superseded any previous revelations about God and Mohammad was the last prophet and was correct.

I think you're wrong, because you aren't taking in the bigger picture.

Originally, before being born in a human body, Jesus claimed to have been with the Father. John 1:1 states, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."

Then, at some point in time, He BECAME flesh according to John 1:14: "The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth."

As a mortal human being, these things you quoted is true; but because he said that He was with God from the beginning, that is only half the picture.

Here are a few other things Jesus said about Himself that you completely ignored:

Jesus said that you can ONLY know God, through Him, Jesus Christ.

He said that “all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.”

When he prayed, he asked God to give him back the glory that he had before the world ever existed.

He said “I am the door to Life. If anybody tries to enter by any other means, he will be treated as a thief and a robber, and be sent to a place of outer darkness where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth!”

Jesus said that He did ONLY what He saw His Father in heaven do. (No man has seen God at any time, yet Jesus SEES God and copies His behaviors, so Jesus must be something MORE than a mere man, since no MAN has seen God.) He KNEW God. He even said that He came from the very HEART of God, so He could say objectively, "When you've seen ME, you've seen the Father."

Furthermore, Jesus said "I am Truth." Was Jesus telling the truth when He said that? Or was He a liar?

Jesus also said "I am Life", and again, "I am the bread of Life that has come down from My Father in heaven to give Life.", and again, "I am the water of life. Whoever is thirsty, come to me, and out of his inner-most being shall flow rivers of living waters", and finally, "I am the Resurrection and the Life. If any man believes in me, though he may die, yet shall he live again."

He said "There is none good but God", then he told somebody else "I am good (or I am the good shepherd)" thus claiming to be God!

He said, "You already believe in God, now believe also in me."

In his famous book Mere Christianity, C. S. Lewis makes this statement, "A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic - on the level with a man who says he is a poached egg - or he would be the devil of hell. You must take your choice. Either this was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse. You can shut Him up for a fool or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us."

Matthew 16:16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.

17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.

Matthew 16:20 Then charged he his disciples that they should tell no man that he was Jesus the Christ.

Jesus Christ was crucified because He claimed Divinity. Go back and reread the Bible. The Sanhedrin had no problem understanding what Jesus said when He said "I Am." When Jesus said, "I and the Father are One." When Jesus said, "If you've seen Me, you've seen the Father."

Jesus was crucified for saying that He is God.

Jesus also said, the era of prophets were until John the baptist. It means, there can not be a prophet after John. Because after John, it was the son of God who came on earth. There is none greater than him to come after him. If anyone came after Jesus calling himself a prophet, he can NEVER be from God. What do you think?

  • 1 decade ago

Very simple, really. Jesus did not use his Divinity until AFTER his Resurrection.

You do not understand what you are reading in the Bible.

Sacred Scripture must be read and interpreted in the light of the same Spirit by whom it was written.

Edit...Why would Jesus have to claim his divinity in the first place?
