Perhaps some of the following reasons apply:

    1. Some other countries require students to spend more time studying Math and Science during Elementary, Junior High and High School.

    2. Some countries where Math and Science test scores are higher also require that students perform significantly more homework in these subjects (Japan is possibly one of those nations).

More focused and taken more seriously

Learning more advanced stuff in the earlier years

their families are more strict than others, im from malaysia, and when i got a B+, i got my butt whupped 89 times ( that was the B+ percentage) they force us to work till our brains explode. im old enough now, live by myself and can finally act stupid in this country and no one will punish me for it.

i may get probation in college but they cant lay a damn finger on my butt!

No one has a completely convincing explanation. It's partly cultural, partly a result of deliberate government policy, and it appears to be partly genetic.
