Why are fighter jets scrambling into the air over the midwest right now?

Anyone hear anything?

Update:

we don't have any bases nearby the closest one is more than 100 miles away

Update 2:

the aircraft are not far away they are circling the area - best i can tell is they are doing 25 mile sweeps - they do not train here

The most probable answer is that they are having drills in your area. I am near an airbase and i have yet to hear my local fighter wing depart so it is not a large scale drill. You can see military aircraft over your homes even if you are far from a military base. More than likely you are underneath a Military Operations Area (MOA) that may just not be used often.

They decided to do practices in my area without warning a few years ago, probably the same thing.

There isn't anything on the news, and i have friends in the military. we aren't being invaded.
