Americans who are somewhat Liberal find it necessary to state that they are "Good Americans" Why?

I have heard this over and over again. What would be a "bad American" ,apart from a traitor or spy of course. Why this statement of assurance to others. Is it not more natural that most of us are loyal to our respective countries? I really mean no offense here but am genuinely curious. Thanks.

Update:

Mitch the question is not what I believe to be a good American but exactly what the people who say it mean. I know that you know what is meant by Liberal, see the previous answerer.

I think it's because a certain group/groups of Conservatives proclaim that they are good Americans and demonize liberals in the press as being "un-American." A lot of this has to do, I think, with the Constitution--for example, many Conservatives believe in the right to bear arms, whereas many Liberals believe that that part of the Constitution is outdated. Conservatives tend to hold the Constitution as the absolute authority on being American/upholding the American way of life, which leads some to believe that, by opposing certain things in the Constitution, Liberals are going against everything America stands for.

Conservatives also tend to view Liberals as Socialists who want a Socialist society rather than a Democratic one. Rather silly, if you think about it, and quite untrue.

Here are some interesting articles in which Conservatives call Liberals "un-American"--

It's even more silly because America was based on unity and equality. Frankly, calling American citizens "un-American" divides us and creates a situation of INequality, since by doing this, there is an "us v. them" mentality

"Then join hand in hand, brave Americans all

By uniting we stand, by dividing we fall."

    01. This is the first time I have ever heard this expression in reference to Liberal.

    02. First of all 'Liberal' is a relative term & you did not define what you mean by 'Liberal', so it would be hard to respond to this question within the context you mean. What do you mean?

    03. What is your definition of "Good American" to which you refer? The question is rather ambiguous. Maybe try wording it with more specifics so that the reader will know who you are targeting & your personal definitions.

    Good Luck & Best Wishes.

a lot of conservatives who saw that going off into crazy town where ignorance reigns supreme think of themselves as true americans. to be honest they had cultural control of the country. in fly over country they just dominated it was quite sad, but luckily fly over country isn't as bad as it use to be. I actually don't know how to answer this question, but I think maybe America is starting to enter a dark age and I guess the rest of the world will just have to continue forward without the US.

They are saying a 'good American' questions the govt and institution and argue that conservatives run the risk of blindly following govt. without questioning...basically, everybody strong left or right are hypocrites.
