Why won't my Kodak C142 camera use my rechargeable batteries?

I have had my batteries and charger tested and both are fine. My camera won't even come on and seems to only like the Kodak batteries that came with it which are dead now. The camera even states on the side that Ni-MH batteries are compatible. What's wrong with my camera and how do I get these batteries to work in it...they do work in other battery operated devices.

Have you tried regular alkaline batteries to make sure the camera works at all?

If it works with regular batteries but not rechargeables, it is a voltage issue, and means the camera is dying anyway. Rechargeable batteries are 1.2 volt, "regular" batteries are 1.5 volt. The camera should be able to use either, but for some reason doesn't like the lower voltage of the rechargeable batteries now.
