Motherboard question?

I have a compaq presario SR1503WM with an ASUS P4GV-LA motherboard and an intel celeron D processor of 2.93Ghz and 1.24GB of RAM and everything else is factory installed. I am wondering what kind of motherboard and ram would make this computer go faster because I have tried to download a file this morning and it is going so slow it has taken 7hrs and it's still only 65% through. I downloaded it on my laptop and it took only 3 hrs. How can I get the desktop to go that fast?

did you download the file on the laptop on the same internet connection? if no, then your issue could be your internet connection, bandwidth, etc...

if yes, being that the model in question is 5 years old (according to the mfg) i would definately start clearing out some hard drive space, make sure all programs running really need to be running, if not, disable them. run CCleaner (ccleaner.com) - free registry/hdd cleaner that works great for getting rid of cruddy old files building up on your computer (not USEFUL files, mind you). its super easy to use.

also, that mobo only supports 2g ram max, which is what i currently run. you would need to buy 184 pin, DDR SDRAM, which you should be able to find most tech places. take our the 256 stick you most likely have in there and put in a 1g stick. 2x1g will max it to 2g of ram.

thats about as efficient as it gets with that setup most likely. your mobo doesnt have anything to do with the speed issues you are experiencing. first and foremost, clean your system with ccleaner or get it professionally cleaned, more than likely your HDD is just full of unnecessary gunk. i liken it to an old car with oil deposit buildup. it needs to be maintained in order to perform well.

hope this helps, best of luck!
