Dirty looks because I'm dating someone outside my race?

Okay, so I'm dating a really nice guy and we've been getting pretty serious lately. We formally started being boyfriend and girlfriend a few weeks ago and for some reason I've been getting dirty looks. Let me clarify by saying he's a very nice black guy, does well in college, and is the best boyfriend I've frankly ever had. And yet, whenever we're out and about I'll sense people giving me dirty looks or catch them glaring at me.

Most of the looks come from, sadly, black women. Why is that? He's made the decision to date outside of his race and so have I. We like each other very much, verging on love at this point, and shouldn't that be the only thing that matters? I was raised to look beyond skin color and see the person, not their race or social class. I know I shouldn't let it bother me but sometimes it gets a bit much.

And I'm just wondering, from all out there, what do you think? Why is it that as soon as we started holding hands and hugging each other in public did I start getting such bile?

You're absolutely right. Whoever you choose to date is your business, whether he's richer, poorer, taller, shorter, fatter, better looking or brainier than you. If you are happy with him, he respects you and you get on well together, then that is all that counts. One of my friends has been going out with a black guy for several years now, they get on famously and she has had no problems as far as I'm aware. Granted they live in London and there is perhaps more tolerance of interracial relationships there than there would be in other places but people should really move on with the times and let people get on with their own lives.

This really bothers me about people. Who cares?! Everyone is a person and should have the same opportunity to fall in love with whoever they want. Whenever you see someone give you a dirty look just smile at them. Don't give them back negative energy because they want more reasons to hate you.

I say that as long as he's a human, you're not dating outside of your race.
