The "Times Have Changed" Argument?

When I ask religious question about principals and moral values of the Bible, I am often faced with this "rebuttal". "But, times have changed since then". If times have changed and you are no longer required to live by certain sections of the bible such as "murder those who work on the sabbath" and "women should keep quiet in churches", then why do you continue to believe the other parts of the bible? It seems to me, that you feel like you get to pick and choose what you want to believe out of the bible. So, why is it wrong for atheists to not believe that god created the universe? we are merely refusing to believe a section of the bible. Or, if it truly is a different time than back then, why doesn't your god write another bible?

Update:

So, how do you "interpret" this line?

Exodus 35:2

"For six days, work is to be done, but the seventh day shall be your holy day, a Sabbath of rest to the LORD. Whoever does any work on it must be put to death."

Update 2:

Wisdom, please read the line above this. "Shal be put to death". Where I'm from "put to death" means killed.

Update 3:

So Wisdom, what you are saying is, you now get to pick not to believe those laws because why?...

Update 4:

Before someone else says, "There is no section of the bible saying murder those who work on the sabbath" please read the quote above. Also, you are arrogant to speak for the "creator of the universe" who are you to "interpret" what God has said. What if you have interpreted incorrectly?

    Christians love to cherry pick.

There are no sections of the bible commanding any person to "murder those who work on the sabbath".

But to the rest, it is not the bible that has changed, neither is it God. It is humanity that has changed. St. Iraneaus once wrote that the gospel is to "mature mankind", and it has been the gospel over the last two thousand years that has done just that. At the dawn of the Church Western society was feeding criminals to animals in the arenas as a means of public entertainment. And that was the social norm. It was the Church that opposed the practice as inhumane and eventually abolished the practice. That was one of the earliest successes of the Church in "maturing mankind". It was not until the Enlightenment that secular writers and thinkers began to adopt the same principles Christianity had taught since the beginning. If history is an example, we would have been feeding criminals to animals in the arenas up until the 18th century.

It was the CHurch that developed the Just War Doctrine and not the secular world. That was established at a time when conquering a neighboring nation was done merely at the whim of the Emperor, and was the practice of all mankind.

So when we say, "that was a different time", it was a different time, and it has been Christianity that has changed mankind over that time. And God need not "write another bible". The successors to the apostles have always written encyclical letters and continue to write encyclical letters addressing the same points of morality and ethics the first apostles addressed.

That is an arguement used by Christians without strong Biblical Knoweldge.

Christians who have biblical knowledge, know how to answer those questions correctly.

For example: In the Old Testemate certain laws were placed as a way to keep Isreal cleam. After Jesus came, he cleansed us all, therefore laws of killing are no longer needed. While yes, the sabath day should be a day to recharge spiritually, Jesus called people hypocrites who would take this as a day to be lazy. There was a woman hurting, and he told all the people that sabath day or not, don't take this as a day to be lazy. Jesus came and cleared up what "work" meant.

Also, the passage does not mean that women should literally be silent in church. It was an instruction to a specific problem going on in a specific church. Most likely revolving around interruption from women. Since we do not know the exact problem Paul was adressing we cannot truly say, but we do know that it was adressing a specific problem. Paul encouraged both men and women to speak in church....

EDIT: I did read it. But what you misunderstand is that the old testemate laws were in place as a way to keep Isreal clean. After Jesus came, death penalty is no longer needed because he cleansed us for everything. Jesus also made it clear what "work" meant. It didn't mean be lazy, or don't literally work. It meant that the sabath day should be a day to be personal with God. You can do that at work as well...

EDIT: No we do not get to pick the laws. Jesus himself made it clear that we should not listen to those laws in the same way. The Old Testemate has books of laws, and the morals are always the same but the punishments are not. Jesus made it very clear that he paid for our sins so we no longer have a death penalty. Have you not even studied the bible? Old Testemate laws, while very informative to understand, should not be taken the same. The New Testemate laws SHOULD be taken the same. Jesus made this clear....

What you are overlooking is the covenantal aspect of that command. It is located within the confines of the old covenant; a legally binding agreement between the two parties, God and the Israelites. You and I are not a party to that covenant, and you cannot be held to the conditions of a covenant you are not a party to. God does not deal with people illegally.

You're confused. About a great many things.

So many, in fact, that there simply is not enough time left in this day to address all of them adequately.

For that matter, the rest of the calendar year isn't looking any better.

    If you think the bible is enough of God's word, you're right;

it's enough to send you to hell.

Keep searching it, and for more.

Is faith the --principle of action-- in all beings?

Or just the beings that don't have all-knowledge?
