Christians, would you rather spend time talking with an honest skeptic or a member of a Christian cult?

Just curious. Oh, and if you don't mind, why?

Definition. While you may disagree with the definition, for the sake of this specific question a "Christian cult" is assumed to be a religious group that rejects Christian Orthodoxy (the beliefs held in common by Roman Catholicism, Protestantism, and Eastern Orthodox churches). As the standard for Christian orthodoxy I'll use the Apostles Creed. For example, a group that rejects the deity of Christ would be rejecting Christian orthodoxy. I realize not everyone agrees with this definition but we need a definition for the discussion.

Update:

I appreciate your feedback. I'm like most of you preferring the skeptic. I have a JW who sends me endless emails giving me the typical garbage against the deity of Christ.

I'll go with the honest skeptic. They seem to be open-minded and have better questions.

I would rather chat with an open-minded honest skeptic.

I consider myself Christian , in that I believe that Jesus of Nazareth was a man who encased the spirit of the Christ, or the first soul created by God.

As a group, we have come to say Jesus Christ as if it were one name , it is not . The Christ spirit is the 1st spirit created by The Creator. It is divine , but it has been embodied by several physical forms(humans). Jesus was the man, the human that encased the Christ spirit. ( And NO I don't spout this ideology at my church- I don't want to give the minister , or elders heart failure- or watch them turn into TAZ)

To truly understand the scope of what Jesus, the Christ, did you have to understand the time in which he lived, the prejudice, the intolerance, the practice of using women as chattel, and the brutality of the times. The leading caste of the Jewish faith was totally corrupt, working both sides of the fence, and reaping benefits not shared by the masses.

Jesus, who by the way, was of royal blood ( the House of David), challenged the upper caste of the Jewish faith and they hated and feared him. They felt threatened and they feared him, his message was that his heavenly father loved all humans equally and that each soul was precious in the sight of God - it took the power of the Sadducee's and the Pharisees away.

I believe more atrocities have been done in the name of Christ than in any other reason ever on the face of the earth . I am sure that God weeps over what man does to man in his name!

I believe that the Bible has been corrupted by 'the church' to suit it's own desires, and to rule over an ignorant population. What better way to enslave a population than to tell them that an unseen God who is vengeful is going to judge you and your multitude of sins, and if found wanting , you will burn in hellfire for eternity?

I do not believe in fear based religion. I believe in the principals that Jesus taught; love one another, accept one another, be kind, do good,be honest, have integrity and be grateful.

Chruch doctrine is just that ,doctrine, it generally has nothing to do with what Jesus taught, so to think outside the religious box is always interesting.

I guess I am an Unorthodox Christian.

Did any of this answer your question?

I've talked to both and both can be enjoyable conversations.

Jehovah's Witnesses tend to get boring after awhile, just because they are clear on what they believe. The conversation always is the same. Not that this is bad, it's just that it's not as fun.

LDS is really interesting, because I can talk to 10 different LDS on the same subject and get 10 different answers all with quotes backing it up. It's more fun to try and figure out what they really believe. I think this is what keeps bringing me back to talking with them.

I like talking with honest skeptics. Some of them have seriously done their homework and have good points. I may disagree with their conclusions, but I have a lot of respect for some of them.

    I will talk to you...please consider ...

    Matthew

    Chapter 13

    18

8 "Hear then the parable of the sower.

    19

The seed sown on the path is the one who hears the word of the kingdom without understanding it, and the evil one comes and steals away what was sown in his heart.

    20

The seed sown on rocky ground is the one who hears the word and receives it at once with joy.

    21

But he has no root and lasts only for a time. When some tribulation or persecution comes because of the word, he immediately falls away.

    22

The seed sown among thorns is the one who hears the word, but then worldly anxiety and the lure of riches choke the word and it bears no fruit.

    23

But the seed sown on rich soil is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and yields a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold."

The sower did not pre>judge the field...he planted freely

we don't save ...Jesus does..we simply plant seeds...And Jesus wants everyone to be saved if possible.

    24

A slave of the Lord should not quarrel, but should be gentle with everyone, able to teach, tolerant,

    25

correcting opponents with kindness. It may be that God will grant them repentance that leads to knowledge of the truth,

    26

6 and that they may return to their senses out of the devil's snare, where they are entrapped by him, for his will.

I'd rather spend time talking to an honest skeptic.

While a Christian myself, I'm always skeptical, even of my own belief. I believe it's healthy to question everything. It shows maturity and you don't look like an ***.

Plus, I absolutely love debates (respectful ones), and an honest skeptic tends to be respectful and nice to debate with, even if you don't agree with them.

honest skeptic for sure,at least they could have an open mind about things.

  • 1 decade ago

member of a Christian cult, at least they are smart enough to see things like the trinity isn't real.

It doesn't matter to me, because I preach to anyone.
