When I try to open the recycle bin, I get 'recycle bin properties' instead. Why?
There are other problems with my pc which started at the same time, they are:
right-click no longer works or just flickers on and off
drop down boxes disappear before I can select an option
Typing into search boxes etc does not work (not even with on on-screen keyboard, but ctrl-alt-delete does work)
I have tried a few things, like a virus check and a system restore- but I do not know what is causing this. Any ideas?

I think the <ALT> key on your keyboard has stuck.. so when you try to open recycle bin, it goes to properties box

I don't think you have a pc virus, I think you have a very bad case of spyware. You said you ran a "virus check." Does that mean you have an antivirus program running in real time on your computer? If so, then get SuperAntiSpyware to run along with the AV program. Between the two, you can keep your computer cleaned up and running better. If you don't have an installed and active AV, get one ASAP! Then get CCleaner to clean up all the left over stuff.
All are free and all are good. I've used AVast for over 6 years, and the other 2 for 2 or more years.

Don't get Avast, its crap.
Virus's of any kind don't bugger up the recycle bin, hackers and virus makers don't care about the recycle bin but the important stuff.
The above people are right, your alt key is stuck, you just need to remove it and stick it back on again til it works.
