PLEASE HELP: Just got braces tightened, and wire is poking?!?

Yesterday (Aug 3) I got thicker wires and power chains. The wire on the upper left side is poking (it's not long or anything, it just hooks onto my cheek and won't stop hooking), but my mouth is super sore from the adjustment.. so I can't put wax on, it hurts too bad.

Should I just use orajal (spell?), and let it be.. or suck it up and put wax on it?

I've previously had problems with this side poking me.. there was a huge sore from the wire going in and out, and it was reeeeally painful, but there was nothing the ortho could do. I want to avoid getting that sore back again.

Please help!

Call your doctor tomorrow and get it fixed. Braces should not be agonizing. Since you can't use wax, and I can't figure out why, chew a wad of sugarless gum and jam it on the sore spot.

It used to work for me when I ran out of wax.

    Good Luck, Ger

  • I assume you can't use wax as there is already a sore there, and the wax is to prevent sores in the first place. Poking wax into a sore can't be much fun....

I'd suggest the same as the others, inform your ortho it's stabbing into you and they should be able to cut it a bit shorter/round it off/bend it a bit to at least alleviate the pain and stop the poking.

The only thing to look forward to if nothing can be done is that after a bit your mouth will have healed, and as a result of this process with no longer be bothered by the wire even if it is in the same pokey position. My braces have given me some pretty bad sores but once it's all healed up, I'm not bothered in that area again. At least not until new wires are fitted...... :-(

Good luck, your teeth will look wonderful!

I had a problem like that. The wire kept stabbing the back of my cheek so they cut the wire shorter, but it still kept stabbing my cheek. I used my finger and bent the end of the wire towards the inside of my mouth. I think it took a while but then I don't remember it bugging me again.

    Hope it helps

this happens a lot. usually they ask you, is there anything poking. go there tomorow, asap, and tell them where it is poking. remember, you should not be in any pain whatsoever from braces, except for the first initial days. go to your orthodontist, and they will cut off the remaining wire.

i think i can still feel a little scar inside my cheek from the scarring soooo

Go to the ortho cuz they can clip it back and fix something if its poking.
