I'm kind of an expert in this area. I grew up in Arizona, and now live in the Nevada desert, but I've also experienced dry environments indoors in usually humid areas such as Michigan. I'm familiar with air so dry my eyes wouldn't open when I woke, and my throat's skin would stick to itself and ache.

Get a humidifier, and let a small piece of milk chocolate melt in your mouth.

A most effective and essential item to get is a humidifier - get a good one with at least 20 liter(5gal) capacity(5 gal will last about 5 days of constant use in a small enclosed dry room). I got a perfect one off craigslist for only 25$ and I replaced the filter, which lasts months before you see the crust of hard water minerals build up on the filter. If you need a solution immediately or you are travelling, putting out pans of water and wet towels can hydrate the air in a room. Filling sinks and bathtubs in dry hotel rooms is effective. Once in a terribly dry hotel room here in Vegas, I even lightly wet the carpet, laid out wet towels, and spilled some water in the bathroom and it worked.

As a child my mother used to put pans of water on the old radiator heaters, and yes, that works well to get rid of dry air. Within an hour of running a humidifier you will notice a big difference in a small bedroom. I'm surprised the doctor didn't advise you to get a humidifier. Usually a humidifier will only do a room or two, so look at the area coverage, which will vary according to how fast you have the fan going on it. Also, sound is important because you may be sleeping close to it - ask an employee to take it out of the box at the store and run it before you buy it. Take it back if it's too noisy, and read reviews online before you purchase.

You should also buy a hygrometer, which measures humidity levels. These are usually not very expensive and can be bought at walmart for $6.50 including a thermometer. Comfortable indoor humidity level is about %40 but will vary so it's whatever you are comfortable with. I'm willing to bet you are much below that. Having too much humidity(50% or over) can encourage dust mites and mold http://www.walmart.com/ip/Springfield-Digital-Indo...

I worked directly with a famous radio and tv voiceover personality. To keep from getting a sore throat while speaking for hours, he took a small square of milk chocolate and put it on his tongue until it melted on its own, and he let it slide down his throat. The waxiness of the chocolate coats the throat and reduces enflamation. I used this once and it worked well. You won't get any more benefit by eating a lot of chocolate - the guy who taught me that would only use one tiny square of Hershey's chocolate. The chocolate solution is only if you don't have a humidifier or you have a sore throat, or anticipate getting a sore throat from use or dryness.

It sounds like your mum is a total idiot. Get to the doctors and find out what is wrong with you, if you need treatment you need to get treatment could be anything from bronchitis to pneumonia to asthma. You don't have a cough for two weeks without a good reason for it.
