There is only one throne in heaven (Revelation 4:2). Who sits upon it?

We know Jesus does (Revelation 1:8,18, 4:8). Where do the Father and the Holy Spirit sit?

In the book of Revelation John shows us the scene of one throne and one sitting on the throne.

    Revelation 4:2

2 And immediately I was in the spirit: and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne.

The book of Revelation tells us that Jesus is the Alpha, Omega, beginning, ending, Almighty, etc.

    Revelation 1:7-8

7 Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen. 8 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.

    Revelation 1:17-18

17 And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last: 18 I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.

    Revelation 4:8

8 And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.

In Revelation 21, the one sitting on the throne is called Alpha, Omega, beginning, ending, and God.

    Revelation 21:5-7

5 And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful. 6 And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely. 7 He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.

We see in the first chapter of Revelation that Jesus is the Alpha, Omega, beginning, ending, one which was, which is, and which is to come, Almighty, the first, and the last. The one sitting on the one throne in heave is making these same claims, using the same descriptive terms. The one sitting on the one throne is Jesus.

How can Jesus be sitting on the throne if he is the lamb standing before the throne? The lamb slain standing before the throne is a popular argument that is often used to show that Jesus is not the one sitting on the throne.

    Revelation 5:6-7

6 And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth. 7 And he came and took the book out of the right hand of him that sat upon the throne.

If this verse is to be taken literally, then Jesus is separate from God, and he is an actual slain lamb in heaven. This verse is actually symbolic of the atonement, showing that Jesus was slain for our sins. Jesus was only slain in his humanity. It doesn’t mean that Jesus wasn’t God, or that he was separate from the one of the throne. Verse 6 shows that the lamb actually came from the midst of the throne.

We see this again in Revelation 7:17:

17 For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.

The one sitting on the throne is the lamb. Our Father became our redeemer.

    Isaiah 63:16

16 Doubtless thou art our father, though Abraham be ignorant of us, and Israel acknowledge us not: thou, O LORD, art our father, our redeemer; thy name is from everlasting.

    2 Corinthians 5:19

19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.

The throne is called the throne of God and of the lamb.

    Revelation 22:3

3 And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him:

Notice the singular pronouns. This continues in the next verse.

    Revelation 22:4

4 And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads.

These verses refer to God and the lamb as ‘he’. Jesus is God manifest in flesh.

    1 Timothy 3:16

16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

Jesus is God and the lamb.

In heaven, we will see one sitting on the throne- Jesus. In Jesus we will see all the fullness of the Godhead.

    Colossians 2:9

9 For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.

When we see Jesus we will see the Father.

    John 14:9

9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?

    Can't be any plainer!

    Jesus On The Throne

  • 1 decade ago

The throne is not a constructed element, it is pure light.

REVELATION 7:17 For the Lamb which is in the MIDST OF THE THRONE shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.

REVELATION 21:23 And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the LIGHT THEREOF.

The paradox is in the perception, and when man attempts to intrude into God's kingdom with his prejudice he views God as a creation of himself.

Is there really "ONLY ONE" throne in heaven?

"To him who overcomes, I [Jesus] will give the right to sit with me ON MY THRONE, just as I overcame and sat down with my Father ON HIS THRONE." - Rev. 3:21, NIV

This Scripture shows how the Father and Son are two separate individual persons and sets the stage for other corresponding Scriptures. For instance, there is Heb. 12:2:

"Looking unto Jesus who...is set down at the right hand of the throne of God." (KJV)

Here, Jesus sits on his throne at the "RIGHT HAND OF GOD". This is significant in two ways:

1.) Even the heavily trinitarian NIV Study Bible admits that:

"right hand.... thus he [Christ] is made SECOND IN AUTHORITY TO GOD HIMSELF. NT references to Jesus' exaltation to this position are many (see...Mark 16:19;...Acts 2:33-36;...Heb 10:12-13)." Compare the NIVSB footnote for Mark 16:19 - "right hand of God. A position of authority SECOND ONLY to God's." - The NIV Study Bible, Zondervan, 1985.

2.) The fact that God is mentioned as one person and Jesus as another precludes any possibility of honest error. Jesus is a distinct and separate person from God and thus does not make him God.

As for the Holy Spirit, it is notable that the Bible never mentions the Holy Spirit as having a throne. This would be an unforgivable slighting of the True God if the Holy Spirit were truly a person who is God (or 1/3 God, or anything else trinitarians want it to be), but it would be exactly what would be expected if the Holy Spirit were not a person but God's active force and therefore is not a person, let alone God Himself.

(See: "If the Holy Spirit is God, then why isn't the Holy Spirit given equal description in the Bible?" http://searchforbibletruths.blogspot.com/2009/12/i... )

The HS is NEVER described to have a throne in Scripture!

God must have one big throne though. Notice what Jesus says in Rev 3:21 (NIV)

To him who overcomes, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I overcame and sat down with my Father on his throne.

Such ones must be God too!

All according which one needs to poop. However, I'm sure heaven can afford more that one throne, or at least some port-a-potties.
