My Computer (PC) Won't Start, Anybody have this before?
I will be brief, I only know a few spec: Compaq, 64-bit, it's actually my mom's and God Knows she doesn't know what she has. A friend built this PC especially for her. The computer won't start at all, it goes right up to the screen where it says Press F11 for boot info or something like that, then it goes black and then I get a "Disk Error press Ctrl + Alt + Delete to restart." It keeps doing this. I can't even get into Safe Mode..I've Pressed F8 and F2, nothing. She has XP btw. If I could track down my friend, I'd ask him but I haven't been able to reach him. Anybody have any ideas what this could be? I think it may be a virus, myself. I will even take backup and restore suggestions, granted I dunno what I'm looking for.
Thanks so much for all the answers. Being that the PC was built, I don't have any backup disks but I am searching online & will more than likely try to burn one with Nero. Your answers have been helpful :D

Disk errors usually indicate hard drive failures.
I hope you have backed up any data before this happened, because if you didn't that data is likely gone.
Definitely not a virus.
If the computer is still under warranty, this would be covered, but the data is still gone.
If it is not under warranty, then you need to pay to have a new hard drive installed and then reinstall windows on that new drive.

Pull the electrical plug(AC-cord)..from the wall..
Wait about 30-seconds..
Open the side cover..and remove any PCI-expansion Cards..
Also pull out all the USB-cables...
Remove all the RAM modules..
Remove the COIN-BATT/
Un-Plug all the peripherals..like the Optical Drives..or the Floppy Drives..
Unplug the Motherboard cables..everything--and label them so as to place them back..
===
Let the PC just sit like that that for about 2-hours...
===
Place a brand new COIN-BATT in the reciever/holder..
Install a single RAM module in SLOT-0(closest to the CPU)..
Install a single Optical Drive(preferably)a DVD Drive..
Don't install a Floppy Drive/..get rid of that..
Install the System C:/drive..preferably a 80-GB..HDD NTFS file System..
Finally..re-plug the motherboard..carefully..
===
You now have what might be considered a original configuration..
===
Its also possible--that if this PC uses a Flat-data-Cable..its been damaged..
Because they break apart if removed and re-connected...so you may want to check that possibility FIRST../
===
At this point..you need to re-install the OS..
With-out plugging in your PC..POP-the Optical tray..and place the OS..intallation disk inside and gently PUSH--closed..
===
Attach your Mouse & Keyboard..
Plug in the AC-Power Cord...my computer will Blink--LEDs at this point in the action..
===
So..look for that..its a good indication..
OK...hit the power button...and TAP...F2..to enter the System Set Up Program..
Look for your Defaults--setting..usually..its F10--or something(get it right)...
Then look for your EXIT--Save Settings--Click--that..
===
The installation disk is in the Optical drive tray--so now begin to TAP..F12//and you should recieve a Selection for BOOT-DRIVE...
If you miss this action..JUST hold in the Power Button..the PC..will SHUT Down..
Leave the installation disk..in the tray..and hit the power button-again...
TAP-F12...to get your BOOT-drive selection..choose Optical drive..or CD-drive--/what-ever/
===
That's that..just follow the installation Prompts...do a complete FORMAT--not the Quick-Format..
===
If you have WIN 7...and your PC is a rebuild...
Useing an old HDD.
You will need to re-install your WIN 7 OS...from RESTORE..
That will take a couple of trys..to find the correct path...
Also look in SYSTEM..for Restore--and choose--re-install..
Its a bit tricky for a re-build...
===
I also use DELETE the partition..I also use ONLY--a single partition..
I would suggest that..use USB External HDDs for archiving...
===
That's as simple as I can make it.

Wow, a lot of people are stupid. This is not a serious problem, you just turned off your PC incorrectly most likely causing an error with one of the boot files. Simply reinstall your OS and if you are using Windows 7, it will do a backup for you during the setup by moving everything to windows.old folder. :)

you have probably lost one byte of one of the boot sector files, happens all the time it would be quite simple for microsoft to write two or three backup files like they do with the registry and if one is missing or corrupted then use the other one.
boot from the XP CD and run the recovery console then run chkdsk /R, then run fixmbr, then run fixboot and take out the CD and reboot if you do not have an XP CD download RC.iso from the web and write a CD with it as it is the recovery console on its own, if none of that works you need to do a repair installation

the disk drive has failed you will have to replace it and
install the operating system on it, you will need the windows cd
and your authorization code that should be on a sticker on the computer
somewhere. you can not install windows without both.
depending on how damaged the old drive is you *may*
be able to recover some files from it by connecting it
as a secondary or slave drive and copying them to the new drive.
you may not be able to recover anything.

Disk error is indicative of a bad hard drive. The solution is to get a new hard drive and install Windows on it.

you have to find the boot disks, and reinstall it all, GL all your data is gone if you didnt back it up, ive had this happen alot.
