What does the phrase "walk off" mean.?
For the last few years, I have heard the phrase "walk-off homer", and now "walk-off single". What does that mean (in baseball)?

The definitive answer is that the HOME TEAM wins the game in their last at-bat. Since they bat last each inning, if in the bottom of the 9th inning or longer (if the game went into extra innings) the home team wins the game by scoring a run the game ends right there. Normally an inning goes until there are 3 outs, the 'walk off' part means the game ends and does not play till 3 outs, everyone walks off the field right then and there.

Walk off means a hit to end the game and "walk off" the field. It would occur in the bottom of the 9th or later innings.
For example in the bottom of the ninth inning the game is tied and a player hits a solo homerun. He has just hit a "walk off"
Or in the bottom of the ninth, game tied, there is a player on third. The hitter knocks in the winning run with a "walk off" single.
Or in the bottom of the ninth the home team is behind by a run with a man on base. The man at the plate hits a two run homerun to "walk off" the field.

the home team must win the game in their last at bat. The term "walk off" is usually reserved for a home run but can be used for other hits in which another players scores.

It is where the home team wins in their last at bat. Whether it be by an error, a walk, a balk, a hit, etc, etc, it must mean that the home team scores the go ahead run in the bottom of the ninth inning or later in extra innings.
