credit card application denied... possible fraud? identity theft? please help....?
Hi so im 19, and currently have one credit card. as i try to build my credit i have attempted to make more purchases by pulling out a second credit card. A week after applying i received a letter stating that i could not be approved due to a fraudulent credit history. this totally confused me as i only have one credit card and it is in good standing. i do not know why, but i just let that go, and moved on with my life (i just told myself that i was not approved). I now need a credit card for school reasons, and I once again tried to apply; This time with another credit provider. To my surprise I received the same reason. They told me i have a fraudulent credit history and said i should contact a credit bureau. i have understood those would be Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion, but when i do go on their website, it looks like they are running a business, it does not look like a government website. I do not know exactly what to do. who do i talk to? who do i call? is there a specific section of the website where i can go with my problem?

Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion are not government websites.
You should order your free reports at www.annualcreditreport.com. You're also entitled to an additional free report from each bureau whenever you place an initial fraud alert on your credit report.
It seems like you also need info on ID theft. Don't be scared. Be cautious and take step to protect yourself. I found an online good article ( 8 Steps to Prevent ID Theft) provided by consumerreports.com. It is a bit long but very informative and useful.
Good luck.

The three credit bureaus are non-government. You need to pull your credit report and look at what is on the report. Identify those items that are not yours and contact the lender and let them know it is not yours.

The credit bureaus are NOT government entities. They are private. Go to http://www.annualcreditreport.com/ to request your annual free credit record disclosures.

You need to get a copy of your credit report
http://www.annualcreditreport.com/ and see what exactly is on your report
Then the hard work begins trying to unravel whatever someone else has done with your credit.
