Here's what I do to use a debit card for online and mail purchases: I set up a checking account just for that purpose. I keep a small balance in it, usually a few hundred more than what I plan to use it for in the upcoming month. (You want more so you don't overdraw and so you have some for unplanned purchases.) I just make sure to add more to the account once I've spent most of what's in it.

Don't do direct deposit with this account, and don't even bother buying checks. Keep it just for Netflix and other places.

Netflix is a reputable company. They make far more staying in business than they would robbing your bank account. There is always a chance you'll run into a crooked employee or that some hacker will get hold of the account info. That's why I limit the amount of money I keep in it.

By the way, once you give Netflix (or any other merchant) your debit card number, they will only ask you for the last few numbers on the card, as a security precaution. So it's only your first transaction with thhem where you have to give the whole card number.

Most reputable companies don't see your full number when you apply or pay for things online. Always check at the bottom (usually) right of the screen. There should be what looks like a padlock which you can click on for security info. Also, if the website address starts with https:// you are on a secured page; if the URL starts with http://,/ you're not.

eg, ebay starts with http:// but paypal begins with https://

Another option is to get some internet security software which has a shopping site security option. I use Norton which has a big green tick next to safe sites and a question mark or cross if it's unclear or a risky site.

Companies like Netflix and Blockbuster are safe. It doesn't pay for them to steal from you. (They gain a few thousand and lose billions in the class-action suit? You don't make money that way.)

I often spend my half an hour to read this blog's posts daily along with a mug of coffee.
