What could cause extremely low FPS on my XPS M1730?

Seemingly out of the blue, I'm getting ridiculously low frames per second while playing games on my XPS M1730. This started a few days ago after having run smoothly for weeks with no problems. Currently running Windows 7.

The only thing that has happened recently is my battery no longer charges, and I've been getting a message while turning on the computer saying as much. Otherwise I've not downloaded anything that would have any effect on my graphics and such.

This lead me to think that the internal network card was off (as it would turn off to conserve battery life when I had XP), however it is most certainly on.

This happens during offline play as well, so it's not my internet connection.

Graphics card drivers are up to date.

I'm not great with computers, so I've effectively exhausted my ideas for how to fix this. If anyone has had a similar problem/has an idea of what could be wrong, I would greatly appreciate your input.

Thanks for your time.

Uninstall any program you don't need because it hogs alot of memory and cpu processing..Also turn of system restore, windows search and indexing service..Also google, tweaks windows 7 for gaming...
