For English flower shows, how would I present cakes etc?

I've never entered before- this is just a local one and I'd like to enter several cakes (victoria sponge, chocolate etc). They have paper plates on which the cakes will be displayed, but do they prefer standard cakes, or do I have a better chance of winning if I do something fancy 'cause I'd love to do all sorts of chocolatey fancy bits on the choc. cake? And I've got an amazing and unusual recipe for carrot cake, but will the judges just be looking for the best example of a STANDARD carrot cake?

Thank you

Sometimes there is a given recipe to follow. If not then you can use your own recipe.

Sometimes judges have their own ideas though. My pate was once given lower marks because it was not glazed although the schedule did not specify that it should be.

It would be best to ask people who have entered your show before.
