What do you think of my idea?

I was recently looking at the idea of a maglev train. I liked the idea, as it had many benefits. Then it came to me. Wouldn't it be good if America had a maglev train right through the country. It would be faster, it could decrease traffic. But you've also got the disadvantage of price. Please tell me your thoughts.

Given the horrendous cost of Maglev technology we could never afford to do a rail line like that.

The fastest a Maglev has ever gone is only a few miles per hour faster than a normal train, and still only half the speed of an airplane.

  • It might be useful in heavily populated metropolitan areas such as New York and Los Angeles, and maybe Chicago. But you'd have a Herculean task ahead of you trying to sell it in the rest of the country. Think about how many new electricity generating plants will be necessary just to run it. Then consider the land acquisition costs for the right of way, and the construction costs. It would not be viable without a heavy governmental subsidy, requiring minimum tax rates which would be higher than our current maximums.

maglev is still relatively new, its gonna be many more years before they even think of doing it. Anyways you can't beat the feel of riding a normal train.
