Why does it take so long for auto makers to announce recalls on cars ? Recently Honda had recall on certain?
car models going back as far as 2003. This pattern for recall is not unique to Honda, it is also the same with the auto makers in North America. When most of the issues relate to safety one has to wonder why it takes so long to notify the consumer who also has a vested interest in the product they drive.Personally I think it comes down to manufacturers willing to run the risk of a product not failing than the cost of a recall .What are your thoughts on this.
The eason this sort of thing angers me is that when we purchased a domestic car about 10 years ago, we had a recurring problem with fuses failing which meant lights failed to operate, the speedometer wasn't lit, etc. The car was under warranty and the repairs were under warranty. My concern was what happens when the warranty ran out.It took a letter to head office to send in their mechamic to find out the problem was a twisted wire or wires under the dashboard( if I remember right). To me a simple enough job and it could have be resolvedraher quickly if someone had actually cared if my family we driving in a safe car.
I can appreciate what you are saying about this recent recall may not be as serious as some and that manufacturers rely on consumer complaints. However most consumers rely on their mechanic to also be accountable o the customer and their safety. The mechanic should be somewhat familiar with something that is a problem and has the potential for setting up a situation for an accident.
Going back to my family's situation with a recurring problem with the fuses and the fact sometimes he had headlights, signal lights no dashboard lights etc. I was afraid to drive in it and since the car was under warranty it seemed the dealership didn't rush to fix the problem. This was a domestic car and that was all we ever bought. There is no way that as an individual consumer you are aware of other complaints. ( We have only had a computor for the last few years) .When you are driving down the expresway at night and suddenly you have no dashboard lights,no headlights you only have surviving on your mind.

It all comes down to what is called in the car industry as the "bean counter"...
All vehicles has problems but the bean counters determine how many issues they will have with a problem and wait until they may or may not have issues, just like the ford pintos..
There are many TSB technical service bulletins on all vehicles and if you look at them really close, there are many that should be recalls instead.
Money and lawsuits, that really brings out recalls in vehicle..

Well can we stop and focus on what was wrong with the Honda vehicles if we want to mention it taking 7-8 years? Ok the problem was that the ignition could have issues that allow you to remove the key when the car isn't in park. Well not many people are going to wear down the car like that immediately. I admit in a some cases the problem should be found sooner, BUT and this is the key thing, they have to get reports. If no one tells them something is wrong they aren't going to know. Once they know there is a problem and it isn't isolated they will look in to the design and see if they need to recall the car.

It may be that the problem doesn't really become known until a few years later. And even then the automaker has to confirm it was a flaw in the design, not just an individual fluke or failure on the part of the drivers.
