Please help - can't change screen resolution?

Every time I restart my laptop the screen resolution resets to 640 x 480 pixels and colors resets to lowest (4 bit). When I go in to try to change this to 32 bit and 1440 x 900, I click on apply but it doesn't change anything on the screen, it asks if I want to keep the new settings and regardless of whether I click yes or no it just gos back to 640 x 480 and 4 bit. I'm running Windows Vista Home edition. I am also a bit technologically challenged so any help or advice to fix this in simple terms would be appreciated!

you probably nee to update the drivers to the screen and the videocard

go to the pc manufacturer's site and download whatever you can find for "video drivers" or "display drivers" and sometimes "graphics drivers" or "monitor drivers"
