i have been a hermit crab owner for years, honestly they don't like moisture and it can be harmfull for them creating mites and such it is also hard for them to dig around i use coconut substrate they can also eat this, you should never directly spray in their containers as well!

if sand castle consistency means wet and clumpy than spray it with a spray bottle regularly. you can use an empty cleaning spray bottle filled with water. if you are too busy you can buy a mister they are available at pet stores.

just Spray the sand every day the crabs will like it too

put water in it but not to much to flood it but just enough for the sand to be soft for them.
