Anywhere in or near Downtown is fine. Really the only places to really avoid are the far South and Southeast sides and the far West side area's

Areas I would avoid totally: 1. Englewood 2. Austin 3. Garfield Park 4. Lawndale 5. Roseland 6. Chicago Lawn 7. Woodlawn So-So or Changing neighborhoods, that I would personally not visit often. Nothing to offer, either. 1. West Lawn 2. West Elsdon 3. Gage Park 4. Marquette Park (just moved-Thank God!) 5. Scottsdale 6. Ashburn/Gresham 7. Chatham 8. Avalon Park 9. Bridgeport/Canaryville (some parts OK) 10. Back of the Yards 11. Brighton Park 12. Morgan Park 13. Little Village 14. Pilsen 15. South Shore (actually an OK one, but if you're white, you just might stick out a bit if you mind that. I don't mean to be steotypical, but great chicken places here! For reall...) Top areas to visit The Loop Lincoln Park (good bar scene) Near North side Visit some museums, please. Museum of Science and Industry is my favorite in Hyde Park.

I guess you need to avoid Lawndale Ave. and Fullerton Ave. in Logan Square. This is one of the potential street gang hotspot (and possibly a main known set) for the Two-Sixers street gang.
Also avoid the Englewood neighborhood as much as possible. The Black Gangster Disciples street gang had made a big presence there in past years and probably this year.
Also..
In the Uptown neighborhood (north side of Chicago), avoid Sheridan Ave. and Leland Ave (cross-streets) especially on a weekend night, especially during the summer (and especially between 12 midnight to 5am). 23 months ago, this area was the spot for near-rioting by 2 rival black gangs.

According to the statistics the Hyde Park neighborhood on the southside is one of the safest areas of Chicago. The University of Chicago is located here in Hyde Park and the U of C is one of the very top universities in the entire United States. Also Hyde Park is the home of President Obama. One of the top Chicago tourist attractions, The Museum of Science and Industry, is also located here in Hyde Park. So come to Hyde Park and enjoy yourself!

Stay in the downtown areas. Downtown is nice, good restaurants, clothing stores and a few interesting sculptures. State street is good and michigan avenue is nice. The north side isn't that bad, they're a few interesting things over there too. Some parts of hyde park are nice, BUT NOT ALL. The major thing about hyde park is that the presidents house is in that neighborhood. Stay AWAY from the rest of the south side. Anywhere by 79th and/or stony island is terrible.

If you drive, stay away from the north side. it can take you 45 minutes to travel 5 miles!
Incredilby congested with no parking anywhere! In addition to that, you need to stay away from that side of the city if you are a homophobe.

ha!
well it totally depends on where you go and what you wanna do.
most of the things to do are on the north side.
i would suggust staying around CLARK street and going east to the lake and west to about Western.
and stay north of the loop (or go in the loop if you wanna see Grant Park)
1. Wrigley Field
2. Willis or Hancock Towers
3. Hopleaf Bar just south of Foster on Clark st
4. Piece in wicker park
5. Violet Hour in Wicker Park
6. Grant Park and the fountain
7. lake front path (just walk on it or bike on it)
8. Dues pizza (Uno's is good too)
9. Annoyance Theatre in Uptown (off the Lawrence Stop) is probably the funniest shows in town.. better then Second City in my opinion
10. Art Institute
11. Green Mill in Uptown (few doors south of Annoyance)
if you go to Uptown, just go go the Green Mill or Annoyance and dont go south of the stop and you should be fine. the Green Mill is a amazing big band place where Al Capone used to hang out. and if you want comedy that doesnt hold back to offend people, go to Annoyance.
dont go on the south side and you should be fine. but theres not much going on in the south side anyway. you pretty much have to look for trouble in chicago to find it because as a tourist, you wont be going in those areas

I would try to stay in downtown or north side. South side is dangerous. Alot of murders, poverty and gang violence on south. Avoid going anywhere near the projects too. If you dont know chicago neighborhoods well its best stay in busy areas

Personally, I would try to avoid all the parts of Chicago contained in Cook and Du Page counties. I would avoid the surrounding counties as well. There isn't really much to see there, anyway. Actually, do yourself a big favor, and avoid Illinois altogether. I've been here 20 years and I hate it.
