What brands offer a cheap alternatives to Electra's Ticino?

I'm looking for a bike I can ride around Boston that doesn't have the Ticino's price tag, yet the same feel. I've also been looking at Republic's aristotle... and well I don't know what other brands I should consider. I'm a broke female college student :) any help/suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

Aristotle: http://www.doobybrain.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/...

Update:

I was hoping to get a single-speed bike, I want it to be very simple and light since I'll have to carry it up and down stairs almost daily.

There are so many hybrid bikes out there. But, you do want a bike with gears! The gears will allow you the option of riding in all the local areas you have there. Single speeds are only good for very short trips on flat ground! You want to look at new or used bikes made by Trek, Specialized, Cannondale or Giant. Rather than go with a cheap manufacturer of new bikes, get a used good one. Better a good used bike, than a bad new one!
