AtheistS,What do you think about,a non religious group starting a campaign to..?

I think we should leave it the way it is because

A) we've got bigger problems to worry about

B) it's almost time we gathered up all the change and melted it down for the metal, especially pennies.

C) it's not true. Even atheists aren't completely reasonable people, having 'faith' in various unexamined positions such as politics, love and even science. (and I'm an atheist). If we trusted reason we wouldn't , as a country, do many of the suicidal things we do.

The United States supreme court has ruled quite some time ago that the god on in god we trust is a generic god (not christian, not islamic--generic) and therefore does not violate the establishment clause of the constitution. Further, religion (we don't have to agree whether it was valid or not valid--it was a historical fact) was a reason people came to the States--thus--as an atheist I have no problem with traditional things that are innocuous and don't try and insert themselves into the legal system. I chuckle every now and then, because in understanding that the god in in god we trust represents jehovah, allah, buddah, vishnu, and all the other thousands of gods and dietys (including the christian satan)-I chuckle because the religous who think in god we trust means something are actually paying homage in part to the dark lord of their religion.

It wouldn't make a difference to me. A penny is still a penny, and the only thing that can change its worth is the state of the economy. My only qualm is that "in God we trust" has nothing to do with money. Change it to "In the economy we trust" if anything, because that's what makes sense in this context. (Although, given recent years, I don't know many Americans who trust in the economy, either.)

Meh, just wait a 10 years and most transactions will take place through credit/debit cards anyway.

In essence the replacement of money could metaphorically signal the decrease in religion for some.

I keep hearing Christian fret about how Muslims are coming to America to supposedly impose sharia law on us, but then many of those same Christians are in favor of keeping "In God We Trust" on our money, putting the Ten Commandments in front of courthouses, putting religious displays on public land, and beginning government functions with prayers to Jesus. Can they not see that each of the measures they supports leaves a gap open for the Muslims they so fear to do the same?

I support the strict separation of church and state. It's the best way to be fair, and it's also safer.

leave it alone. It's too much of a hassle. besides, it's not just pennies. it's on all the coins in circulation. yes, even the new ones had it printed on the outside edge.

I don't really want to waste the millions the government would spend redoing our money when we could instead use money we would have used for that for things like education and helping people who actually f'n need it.

My money has no such religious claims, so it's not an issue for me. That's really a matter for campaigners in the relevant countries.

sounds very odd to me, the fact that they have chosen the penny actually says a lot. its a kind of twisted manipulation that subconsciously says "are we not even worth a penny".

whoever is behind this is probably one of those people with a face that constantly tempts you to slap it.

It doesn't say that on any of my pennies, On mine it has the Queen's head, and says "ELIZABETH II D G (Deo Gratias, which means "by the grace of God").

What your talking about is on American cents, not pennies.
