Going to nyc before or after turning 18?

So I've been wanting to go to the city for years now. Since I was about 8ish, now I'm 17 and haven't really gone except for dinner twice. Anyways. I was thinking about planning a trip there for a weekend but I wanted to go alone. Would it be better if I waited until I was 18 to go? Would there be more for me to do then instead of going now?

I turn 18 in January and that would give me time to save up my money.

Anyways.

Costs.

I was planning on taking a train down there. I'm from the Rochester area, which shouldn't be more than $100, right? From point A [my town] to point B [Queens or Brooklyn] back to point A.

Either get a hotel room [nothing fancy, just decent enough since I have mold and mildew allergies :/ haha] oor I was going to ask my friend if I could stay with him.

If I can't stay with him, I'll get my hotel and subway pass and just meet up.

Since he is from there, he could have an idea of what would be fun to do.

Is that a decent starting plan?

Thank you very much :)

Update:

Oh. I was looking at a weekend. Friday to Sunday. How long would the train ride take? A guess will do.

Well first of all you can't get a hotel room until you're 18, so unless you're staying with friends or family, it's pointless to come.

Aside from that it doesn't really make much difference if you're 17 or 18. You still can't get into bars or clubs that serve alcohol at either age but no other activities/attractions have an age limit that would exclude you.

You can get a train to NYC for under $100 one way especially if you book in advance. The ride is about 7 hours. You would have to take the train into Manhattan because amtrak doesn't have stations in Brooklyn or Queens and then take the MTA to either of those boros.

Finally, depending on when you come and where you stay, even a "nothing fancy" hotel can run 200 dollars a night. Your friend may be able to help you with that.

You might want to look into the Megabus instead of the train. The sooner you buy your ticket, the cheaper it is (I've gotten tickets as cheap as $9 one way). The Megabus also stops at Penn Station when it gets into NYC, so it's convenient. It takes about 6.5 hours while the train takes a minimum of 7 hours one way.
